How do you apply for an Australia student visa from Bangalore?
An Australia student visa application from Bangalore is made entirely online through ImmiAccount, the Department of Home Affairs' online account. Home Affairs says you must apply from outside Australia in most cases. Follow these steps in order:
- 1
Accept your offer and get your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Your Australian university or college issues the CoE once you accept and pay your deposit.
- 2
Buy Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). OSHC is the health insurance every student visa holder must have. Your cover must start on the day you arrive in Australia, not the day your course starts.
- 3
Gather your financial evidence. Show tuition plus living costs, or your parents' income (see below).
- 4
Book your health exam at an approved panel clinic. You can do it before you apply, or wait for a HAP ID, which is the health case number Home Affairs gives you.
- 5
Lodge your application in ImmiAccount. Answer the Genuine Student questions, upload your documents and pay AUD 2,500.
- 6
Respond to any requests quickly. If Home Affairs asks for biometrics, you have 14 days to give them. Check ImmiAccount for any health exam requests.
How much is the Australia student visa fee?
The Australia student visa fee is AUD 2,500 for most applicants from 1 July 2026, up from AUD 2,000, according to Study Australia. Students applying for a stand-alone English (ELICOS) or non-award course are exempt from the increase. Other costs sit on top of the visa fee:
| Cost | Amount (as of October 2026) | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa application charge | AUD 2,500 | Home Affairs, in ImmiAccount |
| Health exam | Set by the clinic | The panel clinic |
| OSHC health insurance | Set by the insurer, for your whole stay | An approved Australian insurer |
| Biometrics, if requested | Follow the instructions in your request letter | Depends on the method Home Affairs gives you |
| Living costs you must show | AUD 29,710 for 12 months, plus AUD 2,000 travel | Not paid; shown as funds |
Check the exact figure on Home Affairs' Visa Pricing Estimator on the day you apply, because visa charges change.
How much money do you need to show for an Australian student visa?
Australian student visa applicants must show AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs, plus travel costs and the first 12 months of course fees, says Home Affairs. Home Affairs suggests AUD 2,000 for travel if you apply from outside Australia, including from India. If your course is 12 months or shorter, use the full course fee. You can deduct any fees you have already paid, with proof such as a receipt.
- Savings or loans: Money deposits, an education loan from a financial institution, a government loan or a scholarship can all count. If you rely on a loan, Home Affairs may ask for evidence such as the loan disbursement.
- Parents' income instead: You can show that your parents or partner earned at least AUD 87,856 in the 12 months before you apply. Combined income of both working parents counts.
- Income evidence: Use official government documents such as tax assessments less than 12 months old. Home Affairs won't accept bank statements or employer letters for the income route.
- Real costs: Home Affairs says actual living costs may be much higher than the visa minimum, and you should not rely on work to support yourself.
What is the Genuine Student requirement?
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement asks you to show that studying in Australia is the main reason you want a student visa. It applies to applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024, replacing the older Genuine Temporary Entrant test, according to Home Affairs.
- Your current circumstances: Your ties to family, community and work, and your economic situation in India.
- Why this course and provider: Why you chose this course in Australia, and what you understand about studying and living there.
- How it helps you: How completing the course will benefit you.
- Anything else relevant: Any other information you want Home Affairs to consider.
Each answer has a 150-word limit and must be in English. Home Affairs gives more weight to statements backed by documents, so attach your transcripts, job letters and course research. Planning to apply for permanent residence later does not count against you under GS.
Do Indian students need a health exam and biometrics for Australia?
Indian students staying in Australia for six months or more usually need a health exam, because India is not on Home Affairs' list of countries with a low risk of tuberculosis (TB). For these stays, Home Affairs lists a medical examination, a chest X-ray from age 11, and a serum creatinine/eGFR kidney test from age 15. Students training as doctors, nurses, dentists or paramedics need extra tests.
Outside Australia, the exam must be done by a Home Affairs panel physician at an approved clinic. Biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) are only needed if Home Affairs asks. India is not on Home Affairs' March 2026 list of countries with an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre, so follow the instructions in your request letter, which may include using the Australian Immi App.
What changed for Australian student visas in October 2026?
Australian student visa rules changed on 2 October 2026. Most applicants can no longer include a partner or children in their student visa application. No one can add family members after the visa is granted. The Home Affairs factsheet lists the exemptions: PhD students, students sponsored by Australia's foreign affairs or defence departments, foreign government scholarship holders, and eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN countries.
If you are married and planning to bring your family, talk this through before you accept an offer. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 are assessed under the old rules.
