Police Clearance Certificate in Bangalore for a Student Visa: Who Needs It and How to Apply

A police clearance certificate (PCC) in Bangalore is issued by the passport office: you apply on the Passport Seva portal, pay ₹750 and attend an appointment at PSK Lalbagh, PSK Whitefield or POPSK Jalahalli. Most student visas need one only in set cases. New Zealand asks for one if you will stay 24 months or longer, while Canada and Australia ask when they request it.

How do you apply for a police clearance certificate in Bangalore?

A police clearance certificate in Bangalore is applied for online through the Passport Seva portal, then completed at an appointment. The steps below follow the portal's Apply for Police Clearance Certificate guide.

  1. 1

Register and log in on the Passport Seva portal. If you already have an account from your passport application, use it.

  2. 2

Choose "Apply for Police Clearance Certificate" and fill in six sections: passport type, applicant details, family details, address details, other details and self-declaration.

  3. 3

Submit the form. You get an Application Reference Number (ARN). Check every detail first, because you cannot change the form after submitting.

  4. 4

Pay ₹750 and book a slot. Payment comes first. Then choose PSK Lalbagh, PSK Whitefield or POPSK Jalahalli and pick a date.

  5. 5

Attend with original documents, including your passport. An SMS with your appointment details is accepted as proof of your booking.

  6. 6

Track your application on the portal until the certificate is ready.

The Ministry of External Affairs Citizen's Charter gives a timeline of up to 7 working days for a PCC. That time does not include any police verification your case needs.

What documents do you need for a PCC?

The documents for a PCC are your current passport and proof of your present address, and the portal's document advisor tailors the list to your case. The key question it asks is whether your personal details or address have changed from those in your passport.

  • Same details, same address: your valid passport is the main document. Bring the originals listed for your case in the document advisor.
  • Changed personal details: if your name, date of birth or other details are now different from your passport, ask the National Call Centre (1800-258-1800) whether you need a passport re-issue first. Sorting this out before you book saves a wasted visit.
  • New address: bring proof of your present address. A move may mean a fresh police verification, which can add time.
  • For the visa itself: Canada does not accept "character certificates", and it rejects certificates limited to one area or time period. Ask for the full PCC from the passport office.

How does police verification work in Bangalore?

Police verification in Bangalore is the check your local police station does on your identity and record, usually at the address on your application. The same process sits behind passports and PCCs. The police check the present address on your form, and their report goes to the passport office before your certificate is issued.

Being at home and having your documents ready when the police visit keeps things moving. If your status shows a pending police report for a long time, you can raise it with RPO Bangalore through grievance.rpoblr@mea.gov.in. Our Passport Seva Kendra Bangalore guide explains the passport police verification modes in detail.

How long is a police clearance certificate valid for a visa?

A police clearance certificate's validity for a visa is set by the country you apply to, not by India. New Zealand says the certificate must be less than 6 months old when you submit your visa application. Get your PCC close to your visa date, not months ahead, so that it is still fresh when you lodge.

PlanWhen to apply for the PCC
NZ student visa, 3-year degreeAbout 1 to 2 months before you lodge the visa
Canada study permitOnly once IRCC asks, or if you have a record to declare
Australia student visaOnce Home Affairs requests it in ImmiAccount
UK or US student visaUsually not needed; follow any request from the visa office

RPO Bangalore, at 8th Block, 80 Feet Road, Koramangala, handles PCCs for every district in Karnataka. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a police clearance certificate cost in Bangalore?
A police clearance certificate costs ₹750 when you apply through the Passport Seva portal, according to its fee calculator in October 2026. You pay online before you can book your appointment at a Bangalore PSK or POPSK. The calculator shows one PCC fee, with no separate Tatkaal rate. If you also need a passport re-issue because your details have changed, that fee is separate.
Do I need a PCC for a UK student visa?
A police clearance certificate is not in GOV.UK's list of documents for a Student visa. The list covers your passport, your CAS, proof of money, a TB test result where it applies, and some other case-by-case items. Follow any extra request the visa office makes. For the TB test, see our TB test for UK visa guide.
Can I get a PCC from a police station in Bangalore instead of the passport office?
IRCC lists several Indian issuers, including your local district police station, the passport office and BLS International. If you already hold a passport, the passport office route is simple, because you book it online through Passport Seva and it is linked to your passport. Whichever you use, make sure it is a full PCC. Canada does not accept character certificates or certificates limited to one area or time period.
How long does it take to get a police clearance certificate in Bangalore?
The Ministry of External Affairs Citizen's Charter gives a timeline of up to 7 working days for a PCC, not counting any police verification. Your total wait also depends on how soon you get an appointment at a Bangalore PSK. Apply about 1 to 2 months before your visa date, and track the status on the Passport Seva portal.
Does New Zealand need a PCC for a 1-year master's?
Not usually. INZ asks for a police certificate if you are 17 or older and will spend 24 months or longer in New Zealand, counting time on earlier visas. A one-year course is shorter than that, though INZ can still ask for one. If your plans include a longer course or a post-study work visa, check the rule again before each new application.
Who can help me with my police clearance certificate and student visa in Bangalore?
You can apply for a PCC yourself on the Passport Seva portal, and each country's immigration website says whether your visa needs one. If you want help, look for someone who checks your file against the official checklist, explains the timing rules, and makes no promises about the visa decision. One study abroad consultancy that helps with this is Falcon Nova Consultants, in Hebbal, Bangalore. Its free counselling and visa documentation support can confirm whether you need a PCC and when to apply.
