ETH Zurich is one of the few universities anywhere that competes with MIT, Stanford and Cambridge on engineering and science, and its fees are closer to those of a public university than a private one. Most international students pay CHF 2,190 a semester. That is higher than it used to be, but still a fraction of what comparable universities charge. The catch is that ETH is very precise about process. There is one master's application window a year, in November, and the Swiss visa has financial rules that surprise many Indian families. Learn the process properly and you are already ahead of most applicants.
Founded in 1855, ETH (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) is run under Swiss federal law, and it is where Albert Einstein began his career. It has 16 departments covering architecture, engineering, the natural sciences, mathematics and management. For Indian students who want to study in Europe, ETH has one key difference from most of this guide series: Switzerland is not in the EU. Its student permits, work rules and post-study options come from Swiss national law, and they are covered below.
ETH Zurich at a Glance
In the 2027 QS ranking, ETH scored 96.3 out of 100. It also climbed in the indicators that matter most after graduation: employer reputation (+9 places), employment outcomes (+10) and international research network (+11).
Bachelor's or Master's? Know Where Indian Students Fit
ETH says the main teaching language of all its bachelor's programmes is German, with some courses in English or French. Applicants with a non-Swiss school certificate must meet ETH's language requirements, which may mean a German proficiency certificate. ETH also checks each application individually to see whether you need to sit its reduced or comprehensive entrance examination. So for most Indian students the realistic way in is the master's degree, and the rest of this guide focuses on that. If you do want to start a bachelor's at ETH, begin learning German seriously now. It turns an unlikely option into a real one.
- Engineering: mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical and process engineering, plus robotics and systems-focused programmes across several departments.
- Computer Science and Data Science: among the programmes Indian applicants ask about most. They are also among the most competitive.
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics: physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics have been at the core of ETH since the 19th century.
- Architecture: the D-ARCH department has its own cost line in ETH's budget. It estimates about CHF 4,800 a year for excursions and model-making.
- Consecutive and specialised master's: consecutive programmes follow on from a bachelor's in the same subject, while specialised programmes cover a single topic from an interdisciplinary angle.
Entry Requirements for the Master's
- Degree length
- Your bachelor's must comprise at least three years of full-time study or 180 ECTS credits, so a three-year Indian degree meets the formal minimum. A four-year BE or BTech clears it easily.
- Grades
- ETH sets minimum average grades for some programmes and for countries with high application numbers, and says applicants should be among the best of their cohort. It does not publish an India-specific cut-off, so don't trust figures you see on forums.
- Holistic review
- Departments consider your undergraduate results, the ranking of your university, your background in the subject, test scores such as the GRE where required, your motivation letter and your letters of recommendation.
- Requirements profiles
- Each master's programme publishes a PDF requirements profile listing the knowledge it expects. Compare it with your transcript course by course. That is the best way to judge your chances in advance.
- English
- ETH accepts TOEFL, IELTS, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. TOEFL, IELTS and C1 Advanced results must be no more than two years old. You are exempt if your bachelor's was taught completely in English and your university officially confirms it.
Get your medium-of-instruction letter early. For Indian graduates, ETH's English exemption depends on an official letter from your university confirming that English was the sole medium of instruction. Ask your registrar in September or October, not in the last week of November. If the letter can't say "sole medium", book a TOEFL or IELTS instead. ETH rejects applications with an invalid or missing certificate on formal grounds, without a department ever reading them.
The Application Timeline for Autumn 2027
Your ETH master's timeline
- 1
Now to October 2026: shortlist up to two programmes, check each requirements profile against your transcript, sort out the English exemption letter or book a test, and ask two professors for references.
- 2
1 November 2026: the eApply window opens for everyone with a non-Swiss bachelor's degree. Pay the CHF 150 fee per programme by credit card. It is non-refundable and cannot be waived.
- 3
30 November 2026, 11:59 am CET (midday): the application window closes. This window is also the deadline for ESOP scholarship applications.
- 4
February 2027: ESOP shortlisted candidates may be invited to a phone or video interview.
- 5
By end of March 2027: ESOP decisions are communicated. Once you have your admission letter, start the visa process at least three months before you plan to travel.
- 6
Within 14 days of arriving in Switzerland: register in person at your local Residents' Registration Office to receive your permit.
Tuition Fees and the Real Annual Budget
Since the autumn semester of 2025, ETH has had two fee groups. Group 1 pays CHF 730 a semester: Swiss and Liechtenstein citizens, people who lived in Switzerland when they earned their university entrance qualification, and some permit holders. Group 2 pays CHF 2,190 a semester, which covers almost every Indian student arriving from India. Your group is fixed at your first enrolment and ETH will not reassign you later, even when you move from a bachelor's to a master's.
| Annual cost item (ETH Financial Aid Office, Sept 2025) | Group 2 (CHF) |
|---|---|
| Tuition incl. exam fees | 4,380 |
| ASVZ sports, Scholarship Fund, VSETH student union | 148 |
| Study materials | 1,000 |
| Excursions | 500 |
| Rent (canton of Zurich average, 2024) | 11,300 |
| Meals | 7,200 |
| Public transport (age 25 or under) | 586 |
| Health insurance (non-EU/EFTA average) | 1,320 |
| Individual expenses | 1,680 |
| Total per year (all departments except D-ARCH) | 28,100 |
Architecture students should budget CHF 31,400 because of D-ARCH's extra costs. ETH's welcome centre puts a room with a shared kitchen and bathroom at CHF 800–1,000 a month, so the rent line above is realistic, not generous. The table is an estimate made in September 2025. Before you fix your family budget, check it against the current version on ETH's financial pages. If you would like help turning these figures into a plan, talk to us.
Scholarships: ESOP and Tuition Waivers
- Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP)
- ETH's flagship master's award. It pays CHF 12,000 per semester, rising to CHF 13,500 from autumn 2027 (HS27), and waives your tuition for the regular length of the programme, three or four semesters. About 60 awards are planned for starts in 2027/28. You need a very strong bachelor's result, roughly the top 10% of your cohort, and you cannot already hold a master's degree.
- How to apply for ESOP
- Apply through eApply in the same 1–30 November window as your master's application. Add a pre-proposal for your master's thesis and two reference letters from professors (if your programme doesn't already require them). Be ready for a possible interview in February. Decisions arrive by the end of March.
Worth knowing: ETH's own budget treats an ESOP holder's yearly costs as CHF 24,000, because the tuition is waived. Your thesis pre-proposal is your chance to show a department exactly what you want to research, so write it with the same care as your motivation letter. Applicants who treat it as an extra piece of evidence, not a formality, give themselves a real advantage.
Swiss Student Visa and Residence Permit
As an Indian citizen you need a national D visa to enter Switzerland to study. The visa is only issued after the cantonal migration office in Zurich has approved your stay. That office makes its decision independently of ETH, and ETH cannot speed it up. The Swiss representation in India estimates total processing at about 8–12 weeks, and ETH advises applying at least three months before your planned entry.
- Where to submit: the embassy's student D-visa checklist says the application has to be made personally at the Visa Section of the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, with the appointment booked online through VFS Global.
- What to bring: three signed application forms with an original and two copies of each document, four photos, your ETH admission letter, a CV, your school and university certificates, an English certificate, and a signed cover letter setting out why you want to study in Switzerland and your future plans.
- Proof of funds for Zurich: ETH says you must show at least CHF 21,000 available (CHF 24,000 for its Basel campus). ETH states that the account must be in your own name, that parents' letters of support are not accepted, and that the bank must be on the FINMA list, meaning a Swiss bank or a foreign bank with a Swiss branch. Other accepted options are a scholarship decision or a Swiss resident's formal declaration of commitment.
- The embassy also asks about your sponsor: its checklist asks for a sponsor's letter explaining where the money comes from, their ITR-V for the last two assessment years, and three months of stamped bank statements. Prepare both sets of evidence, and you will be ready for either office.
- Fees: the embassy checklist lists student D visas as free of charge. ETH mentions a CHF 95 cantonal authorisation fee and a CHF 182 registration fee when you arrive.
- After arrival: register in person within 14 days. The B permit is usually issued for a year and renewed while you study.
Two details that decide most visa files. ETH says the Zurich Migration Office usually refuses applications where the funds are not properly documented, or where the applicant already holds a degree at the level they want to study. If you already have a master's, explain clearly in your cover letter why a second one at ETH is a real step forward. On funds, open the right kind of account early, because a large Indian bank without a Swiss branch does not meet ETH's rule.
Working During Your Studies and Staying On
- Part-time work
- Under Swiss rules, students from outside the EU/EFTA may work from six months after starting their course, for up to 15 hours a week during the semester. The university must confirm that the job won't slow down your studies, and in Zurich the employer applies for the permit.
- Six months to find a job
- After graduating from a Swiss university, you can apply for a six-month short-term permit to look for a job that matches your qualifications. You'll need to show you can support yourself, have somewhere to live, and hold your diploma.
- Getting hired
- Swiss law usually gives Swiss and EU/EFTA candidates priority. Graduates from outside the EU/EFTA can still be admitted if their work is of high academic interest (research, technology) or high economic interest (such as job creation). Build internships, research projects and industry contacts during your degree so a Swiss employer can make that case for you.
Switzerland does not have a long, open post-study work visa like some other countries. What it has is six months and a labour market that values an ETH degree highly. Students who use their thesis and internships to build connections with Swiss employers make the most of that window.
Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka
If you are applying from Bangalore or elsewhere in Karnataka, here is how the ETH process looks from home.
- Your degree, not your board, is what counts. At master's level, ETH looks at your bachelor's results and your university's standing. It publishes no list ranking particular Indian institutions, so make your case with your grades, your coursework against the requirements profile, and your references. That applies whether you studied at a VTU-affiliated college, Bangalore University or anywhere else.
- Karnataka PUC and the bachelor's route: if you are thinking about an ETH bachelor's with your II PUC results from the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, ETH decides after reviewing your complete application whether you need its entrance examination. The programmes are taught mainly in German. Confirm with ETH's Admissions Office before you plan around it.
- Plan a trip to New Delhi for the visa. The Swiss embassy's student checklist requires you to submit the application in person at the Embassy in New Delhi. Book your VFS appointment as soon as your admission letter arrives, and plan travel from Kempegowda International Airport around it.
- Flights to Zurich: plan on one-stop connections via a Gulf or European hub, and compare fares early for the September start.
- Talk it through locally: Falcon Nova's office is in Hebbal, North Bangalore (7th floor, Kirloskar Business Park). You can book a free counselling session in person or online.
Is ETH Zurich Right for You?
ETH suits students who are academically near the top of their cohort, want to go deep into engineering, computing or science, and like the idea of a world top-ten university without private-university fees. It also rewards careful planners: one November window, a thesis pre-proposal if you want ESOP, and a visa file built around the right kind of bank account. If you would rather study in English from your first year, or want a more open post-study work route, look at ETH alongside other options in Europe. Comparing them is part of choosing well. If ETH is your goal, this autumn is the time to act. The window closes on 30 November 2026.
Ready to Build Your ETH Zurich Application?
ETH admissions depend on details: whether your transcript matches the requirements profile, whether your university's letter qualifies you for the English exemption, how strong your thesis pre-proposal is for ESOP, and whether your funds are held the way the Zurich Migration Office expects. You have until 30 November 2026 to get them right. Falcon Nova Consultants has helped hundreds of Indian students plan applications to leading universities abroad. Book a free, no-obligation session at our Hebbal office or online, and we will map your ETH timeline with you.
