KU Leuven was founded in 1425, which makes it one of the oldest universities in Europe still teaching. It is also one of the best-value choices for Indian students. In the 2027 QS World University Rankings it rose to 59th in the world, its highest position ever. Even so, its 2026-27 non-EEA fees for engineering and data-science master's are about €9,500 a year. Add Belgium's 12-month search year after graduation and you have one of Europe's best combinations of quality, cost and career access. The details below put you ahead of most applicants.

KU Leuven's own figures show 66,306 students, 17,738 of them international, from more than 140 countries, spread across several campuses in Belgium, with the historic town of Leuven at the centre. For Indian students planning to study in Europe, it offers English-taught master's programmes in engineering, computer science, statistics, bioscience and business. This guide explains what they cost and how to get in.

KU Leuven's overall QS score was 80.5 out of 100, up from 79.7 the year before, when it placed 60th. Its 4th place worldwide for international research network shows how closely its research is connected with universities around the world, and that is a real advantage if you are aiming for a PhD or an R&D career.

Tuition Fees for Non-EEA Students, 2026-27

KU Leuven publishes its fees through an official tuition-fee tool. Each rate is for a standard 60-credit year. The table shows the 2026-27 non-EEA rates for programmes popular with Indian students:

Master's programme (examples)Non-EEA fee per 60 credits, 2026-27
Engineering: Computer Science€9,493.92
Statistics and Data Science€9,493.92
Bioinformatics€9,493.92
Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, Biomedical Engineering€9,493.92
Business Engineering / Business and Information Systems Engineering€9,493.92
Economics / Business Economics€9,493.92
Criminology, Geography, History, Sociology€5,613.12
Psychology: Theory and Research€5,613.12
Theology and Religious Studies€3,093.12
  • Your rate is fixed from your first year. KU Leuven says the rate for your starting year stays valid for the whole programme, although it may rise with yearly indexation. If you start a new programme later, that year's rate applies.
  • Fees are recalculated by credits. From mid-March, KU Leuven adjusts your fee to the actual number of credits in your Individual Study Programme, so you pay more or less if you take more or fewer than 60.
  • Two-year master's: Engineering: Computer Science, for example, is 120 ECTS. Budget for two years of fees.
  • Fees are rising. The non-EEA rate for Engineering: Computer Science was €7,771.10 in 2025-26 and is €9,493.92 in 2026-27. Starting sooner locks in the current rate.
  • Dutch-taught programmes: if a non-EEA student chooses a Dutch-taught programme that has an English-taught equivalent with a higher fee, the higher fee applies.

Add living costs. KU Leuven advises students to budget €1,050 to €1,400 a month for rent, utilities, food, insurance, study materials, transport and leisure, and it notes that Belgium's indexation system pushes all of these up over time. How to Apply

Your KU Leuven master's timeline

  1. 1

Choose your programme and read its admission requirements. For Engineering: Computer Science, for example, you need an academic bachelor's in engineering science or computer science with a strong mathematics component, plus programming, computer architecture, networks and databases.

  2. 2

Book your English test. Unless your previous degree came from an English-taught programme in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA, you must submit a test result.

  3. 3

Watch for the application window. For 2026-27, applications opened on 9 October 2025, and most non-EEA master's deadlines were 1 March. Business and economics programmes such as Business Engineering and Business Economics closed on 1 May.

  4. 4

Upload your documents: transcripts and diplomas, your English certificate, your passport, a motivation letter, a CV and proof that you paid the application fee. KU Leuven may ask for certified hard copies.

  5. 5

Arrange degree verification. Because your degree was not obtained in Flanders, you will verify it either electronically, the route KU Leuven recommends, or by bringing your original diplomas and transcripts to Belgium.

  6. 6

Once admitted, start your visa straight away. The embassy has up to 90 days to decide.

Apply early in the window. KU Leuven says applications submitted after the deadline will not be evaluated. If you apply in the early months of the window, with your English test already taken and degree verification under way, you leave plenty of time for the visa. Starting by December makes the 1 March deadline easy to meet.

Scholarships

Master Mind Scholarships (Flemish Government)
A grant of €10,225 plus a tuition-fee waiver per academic year: one year for a 60-ECTS master's, two years for 120 ECTS. The host institution may charge the lowest local rate (€136.50 in 2026-27). The 2026-27 call has closed, and Study in Flanders notes that the scheme is under review for 2027-28, so its amount and process may change. It cannot be combined with other Flemish Government scholarships, Erasmus+, Erasmus Mundus, BAEF or Fulbright funding. Check eligibility for Indian nationals when the next call opens.
KU Leuven's scholarship database
KU Leuven keeps a searchable scholarship database that you can filter by country, programme and academic year. Filter by India and your programme each autumn, because awards and deadlines change from year to year.

Your Belgian Student Visa and Proof of Funds

Indian students need a long-stay type D visa. You apply to the Belgian consular post responsible for the country where you legally live, and most posts now use the online Visa-on-Web application. KU Leuven advises applying well in advance, because the embassy has up to 90 days to decide.

  • Core documents: a passport valid for at least 12 months, your KU Leuven admission letter, proof of sufficient means, a criminal record extract if you are over 21, a medical certificate, and proof that you paid the visa fee.
  • Proof of means, option 1: a scholarship certificate showing a monthly allowance at or above the Belgian legal minimum.
  • Option 2: KU Leuven's blocked account. KU Leuven lists €1,100 a month for a single student, plus a €100 handling fee, about €13,300 for the year. The money is released monthly into your Belgian or European bank account after you arrive. KU Leuven says the certificate takes up to 10 working days and covers one academic year at a time.
  • Option 3: Annex 32. A guarantor signs a formal obligation, which must be properly legalised and accepted by the Belgian authorities.
  • Health insurance is optional for the visa application, but you must have it when you apply for your residence permit after arriving.
  • Don't come on a tourist visa. KU Leuven says it will not support a change of status for students who enter Belgium on a short-stay visa.

Check the amount before you transfer. KU Leuven reminds students that the required amounts rise regularly and asks them to check the current figure with the Belgian consular post for their place of residence. Check it the week you make the transfer and your certificate will match the rules the consulate applies.

After Graduation: Belgium's Search Year

Who qualifies
Non-EEA students who complete a bachelor's, (advanced) master's, postgraduate or doctoral degree at a Belgian higher-education institution. This is Belgium's version of the EU rule, from Directive 2016/801, that graduates must get at least nine months to look for work.
What you get
Up to 12 months from the date of issue to look for a job or set up a business, with unlimited access to the Belgian labour market: any employer, no work permit, no salary or hours limit. You can no longer work on a student employment contract. The permit cannot be extended.
When to apply
At least 15 days before your student residence permit expires. You will need your passport, your current residence permit, proof of funds, full health insurance and proof of graduation, which you can download from KU Loket. You do not pay the extra administrative fee.
Then: the single permit
Graduates hired into highly qualified jobs move to a single permit. The employer applies, and processing can take up to 4.5 months. Salary thresholds range from €39,129.60 to €51,613 a year, depending on the region and your age.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

If you are applying from Bangalore or elsewhere in Karnataka, here is how the KU Leuven process looks from home.

  • Your degree is judged on content. KU Leuven's master's requirements are about subjects, not lists of institutions. For Engineering: Computer Science, it looks for solid mathematics and computer science. A VTU-affiliated engineering degree, a Bangalore University BSc or a degree from any other Karnataka university is judged by how well its content matches.
  • Start degree verification early. Ask your university's examination or registrar office whether it can send electronic verification to KU Leuven. KU Leuven does not pay for online verification, so any charge from the provider is yours.
  • II PUC for a bachelor's: KU Leuven publishes no rule specifically for II PUC from the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board. Confirm your eligibility with KU Leuven's Admissions Office before you apply.
  • Your visa application: apply to the Belgian consular post that covers your place of residence in India. Check with that post, or its visa application partner, whether you can submit your documents in Bangalore.
  • Getting there: plan on one-stop connections from Kempegowda International Airport to Brussels. From Brussels Airport, Leuven is a short train ride away.
  • Local support: Falcon Nova's office is in Hebbal, North Bangalore (7th floor, Kirloskar Business Park). You can book a free counselling session in person or online.

Is KU Leuven Right for You?

KU Leuven suits students who want a top-60 research university without top-60 fees. That is especially true for engineering, computer science, statistics and data science, bioscience and business engineering. The 12-month search year then gives you a proper chance to start your career in Belgium. It rewards organised applicants: your English test taken early, your degree verification under way, the 1 March deadline met with room to spare, and your blocked account set up as soon as you are admitted. If you want to compare it with other universities in Europe, that is a sensible step. Comparing carefully is how you find the right fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is KU Leuven's world ranking?
KU Leuven is ranked 59th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027, up from 60th the year before. Its overall QS score rose to 80.5 out of 100. For a university whose non-EEA master's fees are mostly between about €5,600 and €9,500 a year, that makes it one of the strongest value-for-money options in Europe for Indian students.
What are KU Leuven tuition fees for Indian (non-EEA) students?
KU Leuven's official tuition-fee tool lists the 2026-27 non-EEA rate for most science, engineering, business and economics master's at €9,493.92 for a standard 60-credit year. That includes Engineering: Computer Science, Statistics and Data Science, Business Engineering and Economics. Many humanities and social-science master's, such as Criminology, History, Sociology, and Psychology: Theory and Research, cost €5,613.12. The EEA rate is €1,181.40. Your starting-year rate stays valid for your whole programme, subject to yearly indexation, so a two-year (120-credit) master's costs roughly twice the annual figure.
What is the KU Leuven application deadline for non-EEA students?
For the 2026-27 intake, applications opened on 9 October 2025, and most master's programmes set 1 March as the non-EEA deadline. That includes Engineering: Computer Science, Engineering: Energy, and Statistics and Data Science. Several business and economics master's, including Business Engineering, Business Economics and the MBA, closed on 1 May. KU Leuven says applications submitted after the deadline will not be evaluated. Windows for 2027-28 had not yet been published when we wrote this, so check your programme's application window as soon as it appears.
Do Indian students need IELTS or TOEFL for KU Leuven?
Yes, in most cases, even if your degree was taught in English. KU Leuven requires a test from every applicant who did not obtain a previous diploma in an English-taught programme in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA. An English-medium Indian degree does not exempt you. Book your test early, so your score is ready well before the 1 March deadline.
How much money do I need to show for a Belgian student visa?
KU Leuven accepts three kinds of proof: a scholarship certificate, its blocked-account procedure, or an Annex 32 formal obligation signed by a guarantor. For the blocked account, KU Leuven's page lists €1,100 a month for a single student, plus a €100 handling fee, about €13,300 for an academic year. The money is released to you in monthly instalments after you arrive. KU Leuven notes that the required amounts rise regularly, so confirm the current figure with the Belgian consular post before you transfer.
Can I work in Belgium after graduating from KU Leuven?
Yes. Belgium's search year gives non-EEA graduates a residence permit of up to 12 months from the date of issue to look for a job or set up a business. During that time you have unlimited access to the Belgian labour market, with no work permit or salary limit. You must apply at least 15 days before your student residence permit expires. The permit cannot be extended and does not give you unemployment benefits.
Can I apply to KU Leuven from Bangalore with a Karnataka degree or PUC marks?
Yes. KU Leuven assesses international applicants individually, and its master's pages set subject requirements, not lists of Indian institutions. For example, Engineering: Computer Science asks for strong computer science and mathematics. KU Leuven does not publish a specific rule for II PUC from the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, so confirm with the Admissions Office if you are applying for a bachelor's. Because your degree was not obtained in Flanders, KU Leuven will also ask for degree verification. Ask your university, whether that is VTU, Bangalore University or another, early on whether it can verify your degree electronically.
