The University of Amsterdam, UvA to everyone who studies there, has been ranked first in the world for Communication and Media Studies for nine years running in the QS subject rankings. It is also, by its own account, one of just two Dutch universities in the QS world top 100. For Indian students it has another real advantage: the Netherlands offers one of Europe's clearest routes from degree to job, through a one-year orientation year in which you can work for any employer without a permit. Know how the fees, deadlines and permits work before you apply, and you will plan more confidently than most applicants.

UvA was founded in 1632 and today has more than 44,000 students, 6,200 staff and 3,000 PhD researchers. It is one of Europe's largest broad-based research universities, and its campuses are spread across the centre of Amsterdam. If you are planning to study in Europe, this guide sets out what UvA costs, how to apply from India and how to stay on afterwards.

UvA's other top-20 subjects in the 2026 QS subject tables include Geography, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology, and the ShanghaiRanking subject tables also rank it first in the world for Communication. If your interests lie in the social and behavioural sciences, few universities can match UvA's record.

Tuition Fees for Non-EU Students, 2026-27

FacultyBachelor's (per year)One-year master'sTwo-year master's
Economics and Business€13,900€21,800 (School of Economics) / €24,050 (Business School)—

Amsterdam Law School€17,500€25,900—
Science€21,800€34,300€26,000 (Computer Science €24,150)
Medicine and Dentistry€34,700€37,400—

These are UvA's institutional fees for non-EU/EEA students in 2026-27. The statutory fee of €2,694 applies only to EU/EEA and some other eligible students. If you are applying for September 2027, use these figures as your planning baseline and confirm the 2027-28 rate once UvA publishes it. Because fees differ so much by faculty, comparing faculties side by side is one of the easiest ways to plan a smarter budget.

How to Apply: Bachelor's and Master's

Bachelor's programmes

  • Numerus fixus (fixed-quota) programmes close on 15 January: Business Administration, Economics and Business Economics, Political Science, and Psychology.
  • Other bachelor's programmes: the advisory deadline for international applicants is 1 April and the final deadline is 1 May. UvA only accepts later applications in exceptional circumstances.
  • English: non-EU applicants submit certified results by 1 April. That means IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each section, TOEFL iBT 92, or Cambridge C1/C2, taken within two years of the 1 September start.
  • Indian school results: UvA assesses international diplomas through its online diploma finder. Where a qualification isn't listed, the Central Admissions Office assesses it individually.
  • Application fee: €100, non-refundable, for international applicants.

Master's programmes

UvA's master's application, step by step

  1. 1

Choose your programme and check its entry requirements, including the English test and minimum score it sets.

  2. 2

Submit a request in Studielink, the Dutch national enrolment system, at least a week before your deadline, because activating your UvAnetID can take up to 48 hours.

  3. 3

Activate your UvAnetID and check your email for your student number and next steps.

  4. 4

Pay the €100 application fee, which is required for anyone with an international bachelor's degree.

  5. 5

Upload your documents. The deadline for non-EU applicants to the MSc Information Studies (Data Science track) for September 2027 is 31 January. Other programmes set their own dates, so check yours.

  6. 6

Apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship or faculty awards at the same time, through your Graduate School.

Get ahead of the non-EU deadline. UvA programme pages list a separate deadline for non-EU/EEA applicants. For the Data Science track, it is 31 January. Find the non-EU date on your programme's application page and plan backwards from it. If you are still deciding between UvA and other options, a clear timeline is exactly what we can build together, so talk to us.

Scholarships

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS)
For outstanding students with a non-EU/EEA passport who have applied for a UvA master's programme. Applications go to the admissions offices of the Graduate Schools, and deadlines differ by faculty or Graduate School. UvA's central page does not give a single award amount, so check the details with your faculty.
Faculty scholarships
Economics and Business, Humanities, Law, Science, and Social and Behavioural Sciences each run their own scholarships for international students. These are often the most realistic awards to target, because they are matched to the programme you are applying for.

Your Residence Permit and Proof of Funds

Indian students need an MVV (entry visa) plus a VVR (residence permit). In the Netherlands, UvA's immigration team applies to the IND for you as a recognised sponsor, submitting both at the same time. Your job is to send the right documents on time.

  • Funds: the IND requires €1,130.77 a month for university students in 2026, which UvA rounds to €1,131. That is €13,572 for twelve months of living costs, plus your tuition fee.
  • Accepted proof: your own bank statement (current account, dated within two months), a sponsor's bank statement with a signed declaration of support, a scholarship letter showing the amounts for living costs and tuition, or a combination.
  • Fee: €254 per application, non-refundable.
  • Timing: for a February 2027 start, UvA's deadline for students who need an MVV is 11 November 2026. UvA publishes the September-intake deadlines on its immigration pages, so watch for your invitation email.
  • Collecting the MVV in India: after the IND approves, you book an appointment online. The Dutch government says it can take up to 10 working days for the visa sticker to be ready.
  • Keep studying on track: your permit comes with study progress monitoring, so keep in touch with your study adviser if anything slows you down.

Housing: Plan Earlier Than Feels Necessary

UvA says plainly that Amsterdam faces a severe housing shortage and that finding a room can take several months. Its Student Housing Office works with DUWO, De Key and Student Experience to offer furnished rooms, mainly for first-year international students. Rooms are allocated by lottery with no guarantee, and stays are usually limited to one or two semesters. The students who settle in most easily start looking as soon as they have an offer, sign up for the UvA housing lottery, and have a backup plan for their first weeks. Starting early makes a real difference.

Working While You Study

Choose one option per calendar year
Either part-time work of up to 16 hours a week all year, or full-time seasonal work in June, July and August.
Work permit (TWV)
Your employer applies for it at least five weeks before you start work. Self-employed work is exempt, but you must register with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and the tax office.
Internships
Internships that earn ECTS credits can be up to 40 hours a week under a UvA internship agreement. Voluntary internships without credits can be up to 32 hours a week during the academic year and 40 in summer.

After Graduation: The Orientation Year

The orientation year is one of the strongest reasons Indian students choose the Netherlands. The IND grants it to graduates who completed their programme within the three years before they apply. The permit lasts one year and cannot be extended, and during it you may work freely or do an internship without your employer needing a work permit. The fee is €254, and the IND has to decide within 90 days.

  • Apply directly to the IND, not through UvA, once you have your degree certificate or your faculty has completed the IND's completion-of-study form.
  • The lower salary threshold makes a real difference. If an employer sponsors you as a highly skilled migrant during or after the orientation year, the reduced 2026 criterion is €3,122 gross a month. That compares with €4,357 for other applicants under 30 and €5,942 for those 30 and over.
  • Timing tip from UvA: if you start a master's during an orientation year you took after your bachelor's, you cannot claim a second orientation year later. So plan when to use it carefully.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

If you are applying from Bangalore or elsewhere in Karnataka, here is what the UvA process looks like from home.

  • School results for a bachelor's: UvA publishes no rule specifically for II PUC from the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board. Use UvA's diploma finder, and if your board isn't listed, the Central Admissions Office will assess your certificate individually. Check the maths or other subject requirements for your programme early.
  • Your degree for a master's: UvA doesn't publish a list ranking Indian institutions. Graduates from VTU-affiliated colleges, Bangalore University and other Karnataka universities are assessed on the programme's own entry requirements, so read them closely against your transcript.
  • The MVV appointment in Bangalore: the Netherlands runs three offices in India, the Embassy in New Delhi and Consulates-General in Mumbai and Bangalore. When the IND approves your permit, book your appointment online and confirm which office handles your application. The sticker can be ready within 10 working days, and you can collect it in person or have it couriered.
  • Flights: KLM sells fares from Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) to Amsterdam Schiphol, alongside one-stop options on other airlines. Compare current schedules, including whether a nonstop flight runs on your dates, when you book for the September start.
  • Local support: Falcon Nova's office is in Hebbal, North Bangalore (7th floor, Kirloskar Business Park). You can book a free counselling session in person or online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the University of Amsterdam's world ranking?
UvA is ranked 60th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and the university says it is one of two Dutch universities in the QS top 100. In the 2026 QS subject rankings it was number one in the world for Communication and Media Studies for the ninth year in a row, third for Dentistry (a joint UvA-VU programme), and in the top 20 for Geography, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. Use the subject tables as well as the overall rank when you compare programmes.
What is the University of Amsterdam acceptance rate?
UvA does not publish an overall acceptance rate, so treat any percentage you see online as an unofficial estimate. What decides your application is the specific programme: a handful of bachelor's programmes have a fixed quota and a 15 January deadline, while master's programmes check your degree, grades and English against their own entry requirements, with a separate deadline for non-EU applicants. Read your programme's requirements closely and apply well before its non-EU deadline. That is the most reliable way to strengthen your chances.
What are the University of Amsterdam tuition fees for international (non-EU) students?
For 2026-27, UvA's non-EU/EEA institutional fees depend on faculty. A bachelor's costs €13,900 a year in Economics and Business, €16,670 in Social and Behavioural Sciences, €17,500 in Humanities and Law, €21,800 in Science and €34,700 in Medicine. Master's fees also vary by faculty and programme: for example €21,800 at the Amsterdam School of Economics (€24,050 at the Amsterdam Business School), €23,455 in Social and Behavioural Sciences, €25,900 for one-year master's in Humanities and Law, €34,300 for one-year master's in Science (€24,150 to €26,000 a year for most two-year Science master's) and €37,400 in Medicine and Dentistry. EU students pay the statutory fee of €2,694, which does not apply to Indian passport holders. Confirm the rate for your programme and intake on UvA's fees page.
How much money do I need to show for a Dutch student residence permit?
The IND's 2026 standard for university students is €1,130.77 a month, and UvA rounds it to €1,131. That comes to €13,572 for a year of living costs, on top of your tuition. You can show it with your own bank statement (dated within the last two months), a sponsor's bank statement with a signed declaration of support, a scholarship letter, or a combination. UvA's immigration team submits the MVV and residence permit application to the IND for you. The fee is €254 and is non-refundable.
Can Indian students stay in the Netherlands to work after studying at the University of Amsterdam?
Yes. The Dutch orientation year (zoekjaar hoogopgeleiden) gives graduates a one-year residence permit to look for work, within three years of completing their degree. During that year you can work freely, and your employer does not need a work permit. If an employer then sponsors you as a highly skilled migrant, the reduced 2026 salary criterion is €3,122 gross a month, compared with €4,357 (under 30) or €5,942 (30 and over) for other applicants. You apply directly to the IND once you have your degree certificate. The fee is €254 and the permit cannot be extended.
Can I work while studying at the University of Amsterdam?
Yes, with a work permit (TWV) that your employer requests at least five weeks before you start. Each calendar year you choose one option: up to 16 hours a week all year, or full-time work in June, July and August. Self-employed work is exempt from the TWV if you register with the Chamber of Commerce and the tax office. Internships that earn ECTS credits can be up to 40 hours a week under a UvA internship agreement.
Are there University of Amsterdam scholarships for Indian students?
UvA's main award for non-EU students is the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) for master's applicants. You apply through the admissions office of your Graduate School, and deadlines differ by faculty. UvA does not publish one fixed amount for it. Each faculty (Economics and Business, Humanities, Law, Science, and Social and Behavioural Sciences) also runs its own scholarships for international students. Check your faculty's scholarship page when you apply for admission, because the scholarship deadline is often earlier than the programme deadline.
Can I apply to the University of Amsterdam from Bangalore with Karnataka PUC marks?
You can apply. UvA checks international school results through its diploma finder, and if your qualification isn't listed, the Central Admissions Office assesses it individually. UvA does not publish a rule specifically for II PUC from the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, so use the diploma finder and confirm your subject requirements with UvA before the deadline. Once the IND approves your permit, the Netherlands has a Consulate-General in Bangalore where you can book an appointment for your MVV visa sticker.
