Do you need IELTS or GRE coaching in Bangalore?
Coaching for IELTS or the GRE is a choice, not a requirement. No university or visa office asks how you prepared. They only look at your score. The useful question is whether classes will close the gap between your practice score and the score your universities ask for.
Decide in four steps
- 1
Find your target score. Check the admissions page of each university on your shortlist and write down the highest score any of them asks for.
- 2
Take a free official practice test. Use the official material in the table below, under real timing, before you pay anyone.
- 3
Measure the gap. Compare your practice result with your target, section by section. A small gap in one skill is very different from a large gap across all of them.
- 4
Choose your route. Close a small gap with self-study. Consider classes for the skills where you need a teacher's feedback, such as IELTS Writing and Speaking or GRE Quantitative Reasoning.
What free official prep is available for IELTS, GRE, TOEFL and GMAT?
Every major test owner gives away official practice material, and it is the most accurate guide to the real test. Start with these before you compare coaching fees.
| Test | Free official material | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS | Official sample test questions and answers, the IELTS Trial Test, and videos on how Writing is scored | ielts.org, plus links to British Council and IDP preparation |
| GRE General Test | Two free POWERPREP Online practice tests: one untimed, one timed and scored | ETS (ets.org) |
| TOEFL iBT | A free 8-week TOEFL iBT Test Prep Planner | ETS (ets.org) |
| GMAT | Free Official Starter Kit with Practice Exams 1 and 2, and a free 6-week study planner | GMAC (mba.com) |
ETS describes its POWERPREP Online tests as free practice tests for the GRE General Test. GMAC's prep page offers two full-length practice exams at no cost. For IELTS, the official preparation page collects sample questions and links to British Council and IDP resources.
Self-study or coaching classes: which suits you?
| Self-study with official material | Coaching classes | |
|---|---|---|
| Suits you if | Your practice score is close to your target | Your gap is large, or you need someone to mark your writing and speaking |
| Cost | Mostly free, apart from the test fee | A course fee on top of the test fee |
| Feedback | Answer explanations only | A teacher's comments on your essays and speaking |
| Timetable | Fully flexible around college or work | Fixed batch timings, online or in person |
| Main risk | Losing momentum without a plan | Paying for skills you already have |
Many students mix both. They self-study the parts they find easy and pay for help only with the hardest skill. A short course for IELTS Writing, for example, costs less than a full programme and targets the band that is holding you back.
How to choose IELTS or GRE coaching in Bangalore
A good IELTS or GRE coaching class can explain its method plainly and lets you judge it before you pay. Ask these questions at any institute you visit, in person or online.
- Does the class start with a diagnostic test? A class should measure your level with official-style material before it sells you a course length.
- Is the material up to date? Ask whether practice tests match the current format published by IELTS, ETS or GMAC.
- How is writing and speaking marked? For IELTS, ask how often a teacher marks your essays and runs a timed speaking practice.
- What is the batch size and schedule? Check whether the timings fit around your semester exams and your travel time across the city.
- Can you attend a trial class? A trial tells you more about the teaching than any brochure.
- What does the fee include? Ask whether mock tests, study material and doubt sessions are included, or charged separately.
- Be cautious of score promises. No one can promise a band or a GRE score. A trustworthy teacher talks about what you will practise, not about your result.

How long before application deadlines should you prepare?
Plan for at least ten weeks between starting preparation and your first application deadline. GMAC, the GMAT's owner, suggests at least six weeks of serious revision and sitting the test about four weeks before the deadline, so you can retake it if needed. The same timing works well for IELTS and the GRE.
| Weeks before your first deadline | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10 or more | Take a free official practice test and set your target score |
| 10 to 5 | Study: self-study, classes, or a mix of both |
| About 5 | Book your test date at a Bangalore centre or at home |
| About 4 | Sit the test, leaving time for one retake |
| After results | Send scores to your universities and finish your applications |
What students in Bangalore should know
- Plan around your semester exams. Check the academic calendar of your university, whether that is VTU, Bangalore University or another Karnataka university, and fit your preparation weeks and test date around your exam dates.
- Book the test in the city. Pearson lists Bangalore among its PTE test centre cities, and you can sit IELTS, TOEFL, GRE and GMAT in Bangalore too. See our guides to IELTS test centres in Bangalore and PTE, TOEFL, GRE and GMAT test centres.
- Weigh travel time. An online class can save you a long commute on weekdays. An in-person class gives you a fixed routine and face-to-face speaking practice.
- Talk to us in Hebbal. We do not run coaching classes. At our office in Kirloskar Business Park, Hebbal, we help you set your target score from your university shortlist, so any classes you choose have a clear goal. Read more about our Bangalore counselling.
Is coaching right for you?
Coaching is right for you if a practice test shows a gap you cannot close alone in the time you have. If your practice score is already close, official material and a firm study plan are usually enough. Either way, take the free practice test this week. Students planning a UK application can then read our guide to the UK student visa from Bangalore.
