How do you apply for a New Zealand student visa from Bangalore?

A New Zealand student visa from Bangalore is an online application to Immigration New Zealand (INZ), the government department that decides visas. Most Indian students apply for the Fee Paying Student Visa, which covers full-time study for up to 4 years. You do not need to visit VFS for biometrics.

From offer of place to eVisa

  1. 1

Get an offer of place from an approved New Zealand education provider. A conditional offer is fine when you apply from India.

  2. 2

Gather your documents, including proof of funds, a chest X-ray and police certificates if you need them.

  3. 3

Apply online through your INZ account, upload your documents and pay the fee.

  4. 4

Get approval in principle, if you applied with a conditional offer or chose to pay tuition later. Then send your unconditional offer and fee receipt.

  5. 5

Receive your eVisa. INZ emails you when it decides, and sends a copy of your eVisa.

INZ asks students to apply at least 3 months before travel. Its busiest period for student visas is October to March, so an early application gives you the most room.

How much money do you need for a New Zealand student visa?

A New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa needs proof of living funds and proof of tuition. For tertiary study, the living funds rule is NZD 20,000 for each year, as of October 2026.

RequirementAmount or rule
Visa application feeFrom NZD 850; INZ shows the exact fee for India when you enter your country
Living funds: study of 1 year or moreNZD 20,000 for each year
Living funds: study under 1 yearNZD 1,667 for each month
TuitionPaid for 1 course or 1 year of study, whichever is shorter
Return travelA ticket out of New Zealand, or money for one on top of living funds

INZ accepts bank statements, fixed deposits, scholarships and education loans. A loan needs its sanction letter showing the security, moratorium period, interest and repayments. If you study for more than a year, a credible plan for later years, such as evidence of family income, strengthens your application.

  • Sponsors from South Asia: if you are an Indian citizen applying from India, only immediate family can sponsor you. INZ defines this as your partner, parents, siblings, grandparents and parents-in-law.
  • Funds Transfer Scheme: Indian citizens may be able to use INZ's Funds Transfer Scheme to show they can access their money in New Zealand.

Organised money evidence is the strongest part of a student file. INZ wants to see that your funds come from a genuine source it can confirm. Our counsellors can check your statements and loan letter with you for free. Book a session.

Do Indian students need a medical test for a New Zealand student visa?

Indian students need a chest X-ray for a New Zealand student visa when they will stay more than 6 months. India is not on INZ's list of countries with a low incidence of tuberculosis (TB). A full medical examination is not usually needed for fee-paying students, but INZ can ask for one.

  • Use an approved panel physician. INZ only accepts X-rays and medicals from doctors on its panel list. Our visa medical test guide covers the panel clinics in Bangalore.
  • Timing: your X-ray or medical evidence must be less than 3 months old when INZ receives it.
  • What INZ needs: the eMedical reference code from your clinic, or the clinic's name if there is no code.
  • Health questions: you answer them in the form, and INZ uses your answers to decide what evidence you need.

What documents do you need for a New Zealand student visa?

The New Zealand student visa document list from INZ starts with your passport scan, a photo and your offer of place. The table shows the main items.

Passport scanValid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave New Zealand

Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you apply, and INZ does not accept a receipt showing you applied. Indian students get one through Passport Seva. Our police clearance certificate guide explains the Bangalore process.

Is there a VFS New Zealand centre in Bangalore?

VFS Global lists a New Zealand Visa Application Centre at Gopalan Innovation Mall, J. P. Nagar, but its India page showed the Bangalore centre as temporarily closed in October 2026. The student visa is online, so most applicants never need a visa centre. INZ says most people do not need to provide their physical passport.

  • Passport requests: INZ asks some applicants for their original passport. To check, look at the final page of your completed application in your INZ account.
  • If asked: follow INZ's instructions and send it on time. In October 2026, VFS listed its New Zealand centres in Chandigarh, Mumbai and New Delhi as open, Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00. Check VFS's New Zealand centre list for the current status.
  • Questions about your case: VFS and the New Zealand High Commission do not answer visa enquiries. Contact INZ directly.

Applying from Bangalore: what Karnataka students should know

Students in Bangalore can complete every step of a New Zealand student visa without leaving the city: the online form, the X-ray at a panel clinic and the police certificate from Passport Seva.

  • Karnataka academic records: New Zealand providers assess your SSLC and II PUC marksheets from KSEAB, or your VTU or Bangalore University transcripts. Upload clear scans of the same documents in your visa file.
  • English results: INZ says English test results are not mandatory for the visa, but they help show you are a genuine student.
  • Declare any help: INZ requires you to declare any assistance with your visa or your offer of place. If someone else submits for you, they use Form INZ 1226.
  • Free counselling in North Bangalore: meet a counsellor at our Hebbal office to plan your timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a New Zealand student visa take from India?
INZ says 80% of Fee Paying Student Visa applications are decided within 7 weeks. Some take longer, especially between October and March, when INZ is busiest. Apply at least 3 months before you travel, and upload every document at the start to avoid delays.
Can I work while studying in New Zealand?
Yes, depending on your visa conditions. A Fee Paying Student Visa may let you work up to 25 hours a week during study and full-time in scheduled holidays. Full-time holiday work needs a course worth 120 credits and evidence of your holiday dates. Check the conditions printed on your eVisa.
Do I need to pay my full tuition before applying?
Not always. You must show you have paid tuition for 1 course or 1 year, whichever is shorter. If you apply from outside New Zealand, you can choose to pay after INZ approves your application in principle. This takes longer, because INZ needs your fee receipt before it issues the visa.
Who can sponsor me for a New Zealand student visa from India?
If you are an Indian citizen applying from India, only immediate family can sponsor you or sign a financial undertaking. INZ lists your partner, parents, siblings, grandparents and parents-in-law. A sponsor gives you a sharing ID for your application. A guarantor completes Form INZ 1014 and shows money that is their own, not borrowed.
Is a police certificate required for a New Zealand student visa?
Only in some cases. You need police certificates if you are 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer, including past visits. Certificates must be less than 6 months old when you apply. You do not need new ones if you gave INZ certificates issued in the last 36 months.
Who can help me with my New Zealand student visa application in Bangalore?
You can apply yourself, because INZ publishes every requirement for free on its website. If you want help, look for someone who checks your evidence against INZ's official list, explains the funds rules and makes no promises about the outcome. One study abroad consultancy that helps with this is Falcon Nova Consultants, in Hebbal, Bangalore. Falcon Nova offers free counselling, document checks and visa documentation support, and can help you arrange an education loan through partner lenders.
