What Can You Study at McMaster?

1. Health Sciences, Nursing and Life Sciences

The Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) is one of McMaster's most sought-after programs, with its own supplementary application. Nursing, Kinesiology, Medical Radiation Sciences and Life Sciences also give Indian students interested in medicine, research or public health a strong base.

2. Engineering and Computer Science

Students enter Engineering I, a common first year, before choosing a discipline such as Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical, Materials, Engineering Physics, Software or Integrated Biomedical Engineering. The Faculty of Engineering runs a co-op program, and Computer Science has its own direct-entry stream. Both require a supplementary application.

3. Business, Social Sciences and Humanities

The DeGroote School of Business offers the Business program, which has an optional supplementary application you can use to strengthen your file. Social Sciences, Humanities, Economics and the Integrated Business and Humanities program round out the options.

Popular with Indian students: Engineering I, Computer Science, Honours Health Sciences, Life Sciences, Business, and Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences (iBioMed).

Tuition and Living Costs (2026/27 Estimates)

Level I programEstimated full-time tuition (CAD)
Engineering I$69,353.54
Computer Science$56,232.60
Health Sciences$54,017.40
Business$50,003.40
Life Sciences$47,535.30
Social Sciences / Humanities$45,158.40

These are McMaster's unofficial estimates for 2026/27 and exclude ancillary fees. Residence ranges from $6,550 for a quad room to $11,950 for a super single with a connected washroom, and meal plans are extra. If you are aiming for Fall 2027, treat these as a baseline and confirm the new year's figures when McMaster publishes them. Entry Requirements for Indian Students

Undergraduate

  • Qualifications: CBSE (AISSCE) or CISCE (ISC). Year 12 state board exams with excellent results are considered individually.
  • Documents: Class X board results, the Class XI transcript and Class XII predicted grades.
  • How your average is calculated: Five Class XII subjects, including all prerequisites for your program, based on predicted grades. The minimum average varies by program.
  • Supplementary applications: Required for Engineering, Computer Science and Health Sciences. Business has an optional one, which is useful if your average may fall below the anticipated cut-off.

Graduate

McMaster's School of Graduate Studies sets requirements program by program, including any extra English requirements. The application fee is $150. Check your program page for the minimum average, prerequisites and deadlines.

English Language Requirements (Undergraduate)

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each component.
  • TOEFL iBT (tests from 21 January 2026): 4.5 overall, with 4.0 in Reading and Writing and 4.5 in Listening.
  • PTE Academic: 60 overall, with 60 in Writing and Speaking. Duolingo: 120 overall (115 Reading, 125 Writing, 110 Listening, 115 Speaking).
  • Possible exemption: At least four years at an accredited English-medium secondary school or college, or at least one year at an English-medium university. Board curriculum alone does not decide this. What counts is the medium of instruction and how long you studied in it.

Scholarships and Awards

McMaster describes over $20 million in awards for international fee-paying undergraduates, with values from $7,500 to more than $200,000. International students can receive one award by application, one automatic award and multiple financial awards. To keep them, you must pay international fees, study full-time in fall and winter, and meet the conditions of your offer. Payments are made in two halves, after the fall and winter drop-and-add periods.

Insider edge: McMaster doesn't publish every international award value on one page, and the application-based awards sit alongside the automatic ones. Submitting your admission application by the recommended early dates in November 2026 gives you the most time to find and complete the award applications you qualify for.

Your Canadian Study Permit: Current Rules

What Ontario-bound students need

  1. 1

Letter of acceptance from McMaster. This is the starting point of your application.

  2. 2

Provincial attestation letter (PAL), if you are an undergraduate. Since 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at a public institution don't need one. Ontario received the largest share of the 2026 national cap: 104,780 study permit applications.

  3. 3

Proof of funds. For applications on or after 1 September 2026, IRCC requires CAD 23,448 for one year's living costs (single applicant outside Quebec), plus first-year tuition and travel. Six months of bank statements, a Canadian GIC or funds already in a Canadian account can all serve as proof.

  4. 4

Biometrics (CAD 85) at a Canada visa application centre — for Bangalore applicants, the VFS Bengaluru centre.

  5. 5

Work rights: Up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.

Good news for co-op students: Since 1 April 2026, post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for a required placement that makes up 50% or less of their program, as long as McMaster confirms the requirement in a letter and your study permit allows on-campus work. There is no weekly hour limit on the placement, and you save a separate application.

After Graduation

  • PGWP field-of-study exemption: It applies to all bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.
  • Language: CLB 7 in all four skills for degree graduates.
  • Length: Up to three years for programs of two years or more, and three years for eligible master's programs of at least eight months.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

  • Karnataka II PUC: McMaster considers Year 12 state board results individually. II PUC exams are conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). Strong marks in your program's prerequisite subjects, such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for Engineering, are what McMaster will look at. Confirm the details for your program with McMaster admissions.
  • CBSE and ICSE schools in Bangalore: McMaster uses Class XII predicted grades, so request them from your school in time for the November early dates.
  • English exemption check: If you have studied in an English-medium school for four or more years, you may qualify for McMaster's exemption. Keep a school letter confirming the medium of instruction ready in case McMaster asks for it.
  • Biometrics: Canada's visa application centre in Bangalore (VFS Bengaluru) takes biometrics, so you can give them without leaving the city.
  • Travel: Hamilton is in the Toronto region. From Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), plan for at least one connection. Compare routings via Indian, Gulf, European or Canadian hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does McMaster University cost for international students?
McMaster's cost estimator gives unofficial 2026/27 full-time tuition estimates for Level I international students of about $69,354 for Engineering I, $56,233 for Computer Science, $54,017 for Health Sciences, $50,003 for Business, $47,535 for Life Sciences and $45,158 for Social Sciences or Humanities. Ancillary fees are extra. On-campus residence ranges from $6,550 (quad room) to $11,950 (super single) before a meal plan. Use the estimator for your exact program and add your meal plan to get a realistic first-year budget.
Does McMaster accept CBSE, ISC and Indian state board marks?
Yes. McMaster's general requirements for India are the All India Senior School Certificate (CBSE) or the Indian School Certificate (CISCE), and it states that Year 12 State Board exams with excellent results will also be considered individually. For CBSE and CISCE, it asks for Class X board results, the Class XI transcript and Class XII predicted grades. Your average is calculated on five Class XII subjects, including your program's prerequisites.
Can I apply to McMaster from Bangalore with Karnataka PUC marks?
You can. McMaster considers Year 12 state board results individually, and Karnataka's II PUC is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). Because state boards are assessed case by case rather than on a published scale, a strong II PUC result in your prerequisite subjects matters, and confirming the requirements for your specific program with McMaster before you apply is worthwhile.
What IELTS score does McMaster need?
For direct undergraduate entry, McMaster asks for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component. Alternatives include TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall on the new scale (4.0 in Reading and Writing, 4.5 in Listening), PTE Academic 60 (60 in Writing and Speaking) and Duolingo 120 with set subscores. You may be exempt if you studied at an accredited English-medium secondary school or college for at least four years, or at an English-medium university for at least one year.
What are McMaster's deadlines for international students?
For Fall 2027, Engineering and Computer Science close on 15 January 2027 (recommended early submission 12 November 2026), with the supplementary application due 28 January 2027. Honours Health Sciences also closes on 15 January 2027, with its supplementary application due in early to mid February. Business closes on 1 April 2027. For all non-Ontario applicants, supporting documents, including English test scores, are due 1 April 2027.
Can I stay and work in Canada after McMaster?
Yes. McMaster bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are exempt from the PGWP field-of-study requirement, and degree graduates need CLB 7 in English. A program of two years or more can lead to a three-year PGWP. Eligible master's graduates can also get three years if their program lasted at least eight months.
