Your Canadian Study Permit: Current Rules

From Queen's offer to study permit

  1. 1

Accept your offer. Your Queen's letter of acceptance is the core document.

  2. 2

Get a PAL if you are an undergraduate. Since 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at a public institution are exempt. Ontario held the largest 2026 cap allocation, 104,780 applications.

  3. 3

Show proof of funds. For applications on or after 1 September 2026, IRCC requires CAD 23,448 for one year's living costs (single applicant outside Quebec), plus first-year tuition and travel. Six months of bank statements, a Canadian GIC or funds already in a Canadian account can all serve as proof.

  4. 4

Give biometrics (CAD 85) at a Canada visa application centre — for Bangalore applicants, the VFS Bengaluru centre.

  5. 5

Work rights: Up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.

Co-op made simpler: Since 1 April 2026, post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for a required placement that makes up 50% or less of their program, as long as Queen's confirms the requirement in a letter and your study permit allows on-campus work. There is no weekly hour limit on the placement.

After Graduation: PGWP

  • Degrees are exempt from field-of-study rules: This covers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs.
  • Language: CLB 7 in all four skills.
  • Length: Up to three years for programs of two years or more, and up to three years for eligible master's programs of at least eight months.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

  • Karnataka PUC students, confirm first: Queen's India page names CBSE and CISCE only. II PUC is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB), so email admission@queensu.ca early to confirm how your results will be assessed for your chosen program.
  • CBSE and ICSE schools in Bangalore: Predicted grades, interim Year 12 grades or pre-board results can all support your application. Keep your Roll Number and Admit Card ID (CBSE) or UID and Index Number (ISC) ready for verification.
  • English waiver: If your last three years were full-time in an English-medium school, you may not need a test, which saves you both time and money.
  • Biometrics: Canada's visa application centre in Bangalore (VFS Bengaluru) takes biometrics, so you can give them without leaving the city.
  • Travel: From Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), plan for at least one connection to reach Ontario. Compare routings via Indian, Gulf, European or Canadian hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Queen's University cost for international students?
Queen's official 2026-27 international tuition for a full first-year load is $44,809.80 for Arts and Science, $54,808.20 for Computing, $59,283.74 for Smith Engineering and $60,839.46 for Smith Commerce (years 1 and 2). Does Queen's give scholarships to Indian students?
Yes, and you are considered automatically. The Dean's International Award program covers international students entering first-entry programs. Its values include $5,000 to $25,000 a year in Arts and Science, $15,000 to $25,000 a year in Smith Commerce, $10,000 to $25,000 a year in Smith Engineering and $10,000 to $15,000 a year in Health Sciences. Each is renewable for three more years (four years in total) if you meet the renewal conditions. One insider point: Queen's Major Admission Awards are only for Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons, so focus your energy on the international awards.
Can I apply to Queen's from Bangalore with Karnataka PUC marks?
Queen's India requirements page names the All India Senior School Certificate (CBSE) and the Indian School Certificate (CISCE). It doesn't list state boards such as Karnataka's II PUC, which is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). If you are a PUC student, write to Queen's admissions (admission@queensu.ca) before you apply to confirm how your board will be assessed. Settling this early gives you the most options.
What IELTS score does Queen's University require?
Undergraduate entry needs IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Queen's also accepts TOEFL iBT (4.5 overall with no skill below 4.0, or 88 with at least 20 per section before January 2026), PTE Academic 60, Duolingo 120, Cambridge 175 and LanguageCert Academic 70. You don't need a test if you studied full-time at an English-medium institution for the most recent three years before university. Many Indian CBSE and ICSE students meet this, and Queen's may still ask for confirmation.
What are Queen's deadlines for Fall 2027?
Smith Commerce, Health Sciences and Nursing close on 1 February 2027, with a mandatory supplementary application due 15 February 2027. All other first-year programs close on 1 March 2027. All documents, including transcripts and English test scores, are due by 31 March 2027.
Can I work in Canada after graduating from Queen's?
Yes. A Queen's bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree is exempt from the PGWP field-of-study requirement, and degree graduates need CLB 7 in English. Programs of two years or more can lead to a three-year PGWP. Queen's also runs QUIP, a 12 to 16 month internship program, which is a strong way to build Canadian experience before you graduate.
