The ivy-covered Arts Building in autumn. The U of A has ranked in the QS global top 100 for three years running.

The University of Alberta is one of the few places where you can study petroleum engineering, mining engineering and nursing at a global top-10 level for your subject and still know your full tuition before you accept your offer. The U of A sits at #96 in the QS World University Rankings 2027, its third straight year in the world's top 100, and ranks fourth in Canada.

For Indian students weighing up study in Canada, Edmonton offers something the big coastal cities rarely do: a top-100 research university, a tuition guarantee that removes the guesswork from your budget, and a long-running engineering co-op program. This guide covers what the U of A costs, what it looks for, the Canadian visa rules now in force, and how to apply from Bangalore and Karnataka.

University of Alberta Ranking and Key Numbers

QS World University Rankings 2027#96 in the world, #4 in Canada

Those subject rankings matter. Alberta is at the centre of Canada's energy, resources and health sectors, and the U of A's strongest departments line up with the industries around it. Studying where your field actually operates gives your résumé a real head start.

What Can You Study at the U of A?

1. Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering covers chemical, civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, materials, mining and petroleum engineering, plus engineering physics and specialised options such as nanoengineering and biomedical streams. Its co-op program has run since 1981 and alternates academic terms with paid work terms, which is one of the most direct routes from a Canadian degree to Canadian work experience.

2. Computing Science and Science

The Faculty of Science is home to Computing Science, a popular choice with Indian applicants interested in AI, machine learning and software. The U of A has announced that from Fall 2027, tuition for new BSc Computing Science students will rise to the Engineering level. If computing is your goal, budget at the Engineering rate and check the figure on your offer letter, which is the rate you will be guaranteed.

3. Business, Nursing and Health

The Alberta School of Business offers the Bachelor of Commerce, and the Faculty of Nursing ranks in the QS global top 10 for its subject. Health sciences, kinesiology and pharmacy round out one of Canada's broadest health portfolios.

Popular with Indian students: Computer, Electrical, Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering, Computing Science, the BCom, and course-based master's programs in engineering and science.

Tuition and Living Costs (Guaranteed Fall 2026 Rates)

The U of A uses a program-based tuition guarantee for international undergraduates. The annual and total program tuition shown on your offer stays fixed for your program's standard length plus one year. For a four-year degree that means five years of guaranteed tuition. These are the current Fall 2026 figures from the university's cost calculator. For Fall 2027 entry, the U of A has approved a 5.5% increase for new international undergraduates, with Computing Science rising 26% to match Engineering and Nursing rising 20%. Treat the table as a baseline and add about 5.5% for most programs:

Program (Fall 2026 entry)Annual tuition (CAD)4-year tuition (CAD)
BSc Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Computer)$49,952.40$199,809.60
Bachelor of Commerce$46,546.80$186,187.20
Bachelor of Science$39,792.00$159,168.00
Bachelor of Arts$39,232.80$156,931.20

On top of tuition, the calculator estimates about $11,800 a year for non-tuition costs: student fees, health and dental plans, a U-Pass, books, and $8,531 for room and board. The admissions page gives a separate estimate of $14,800+ for residence and a meal plan in Schäffer Hall, so budget for the higher figure if you want a residence place with meals. Paying a $5,000 tuition deposit secures your seat. Mapping these numbers against Canada's proof-of-funds rules is exactly what we plan with families, so talk to us and turn the figures into a clear plan.

Graduate Tuition

Graduate costs differ sharply by program type. For 2026-27, the U of A lists $10,518.72 a year for full-time thesis-based programs for international students. Course-based master's programs are charged $826.36 per credit, or $2,479.08 per standard three-credit course, so the total depends on how many courses your program requires. If you are open to research, a thesis-based master's is one of the best-value routes in Canada.

Entry Requirements for Indian Students

Undergraduate

  • Accepted qualifications: CBSE Class XII, CISCE (ISC) Class XII, or Class XII from any other Indian state board, including Karnataka's II PUC.
  • Five subjects: The U of A assesses five subjects, which vary by program. Mathematics is required for Engineering, Business and Science programs, and it must be standard Math, not Applied or Business Math.
  • Early admission: CBSE and CISCE students are assessed on Class X results plus predicted Class XII grades. State board students are assessed on a competitive Class XI average plus Class XII registration or mid-year results.
  • Final admission: Your official Class XII board results. CBSE students give their Roll Number, School ID and Admit Card Number for online verification.
  • No Class XII Math? If you are applying to Science, Business or Engineering without 12th Standard Math, the U of A points you to its online Alberta Math 30-1 course.

Graduate (Master's and PhD)

  • Minimum academic standard for India: 60%, First Class standing/division, or a B, according to the U of A's minimum requirements by country. Most programs set their own higher competitive bar.
  • Program-specific extras: References, a statement of purpose and, for thesis programs, a potential supervisor. Check each program page carefully.

English Language Requirements

  • CBSE/CISCE shortcut: CBSE students with 75%+ in Class XII Core English, Elective English or Elective English C (or 80% in Functional English), and ISC students with 75%+ in English, meet the U of A's undergraduate English requirement without a test.
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (One Skill Retake results are not accepted for graduate admission).
  • TOEFL iBT: 90 with no section below 21 for tests before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall with no band below 4.5 for tests from that date.
  • PTE Academic: 61, with at least 60 in each skill. Duolingo: 120, with no subscore below 100.
  • Health Sciences and Education programs have an additional spoken-English requirement (for example IELTS Speaking 7.5).

Scholarships for International Students

International Admission Scholarship: up to CAD 10,000 (automatic)
Awarded to top students based on admission average. You are considered automatically when you apply, so a strong Class XII result pays off directly.
Regional Excellence Scholarship: up to CAD 5,000 (automatic)
For top students from certain regions. The U of A doesn't list which regions on its main page, so check the current list for India when you apply.
President's International Distinction Scholarship: up to CAD 120,000 over four years

Your Canadian Study Permit: The Rules in Force Now

From offer to study permit

  1. 1

Accept your offer and pay the deposit. Your letter of acceptance is the foundation of your study permit application.

  2. 2

Get your PAL if you are an undergraduate. Most applicants need a provincial attestation letter. Since 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at public institutions like the U of A are exempt. Under the 2026 cap, Alberta's allocation was 32,271 applications. IRCC sets new allocations each year, so moving promptly helps.

  3. 3

Show proof of funds. For applications made on or after 1 September 2026, IRCC requires CAD 23,448 for one year's living costs (single applicant outside Quebec), plus your first-year tuition and travel. Six months of bank statements, a Canadian GIC or funds already in a Canadian account can all serve as proof.

  4. 4

Give biometrics (CAD 85) at a Canada visa application centre — for Bangalore applicants, the VFS Bengaluru centre (see the Bangalore section below).

  5. 5

Plan your work rights. Once your studies begin, you can work up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.

Co-op just got simpler. Since 1 April 2026, post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit, provided the university confirms in a letter that the placement is a required part of the program, the placement makes up 50% or less of it, and your study permit allows on-campus work. There is no weekly hour limit on the placement. For U of A Engineering co-op students, that means one less application.

After Graduation: The PGWP

  • No field-of-study restriction for degrees: Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are exempt from the PGWP field-of-study requirement.
  • Language: Degree graduates need CLB 7 in all four skills.
  • Length: Programs of two years or more can lead to a three-year PGWP. Eligible master's graduates can get three years even when the program was shorter than two years, as long as it lasted at least eight months.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

Many U of A applicants in our part of India come from Karnataka's state board, so here is what's specific to you:

  • II PUC is on the accepted list. The U of A accepts Class XII from all Indian state boards. Karnataka's II PUC exams are conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). For early admission, state board students are assessed on their Class XI (I PUC) average plus II PUC registration or mid-year results.
  • Plan an English test. The 75% Class XII English route applies to CBSE and CISCE students only. PUC students should budget time for IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo, ideally taken early in II PUC.
  • CBSE and ICSE schools in Bangalore: Your predicted Class XII grades and Class X results are what early admission uses, so ask your school for predicted grades well before the 1 March deadline.
  • Biometrics close to home: Canada's visa application centre in Bangalore (VFS Bengaluru) takes biometrics, so you can give them without leaving the city.
  • Getting to Edmonton: From Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), expect a routing with at least one connection. Compare fares via major Indian, Gulf, European or Canadian hubs when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the University of Alberta cost for international students?
The U of A's own cost calculator shows guaranteed Fall 2026 tuition for international undergraduates of $49,952.40 a year for Engineering (for example Mechanical or Computer Engineering), $46,546.80 for the Bachelor of Commerce, $39,792.00 for the Bachelor of Science and $39,232.80 for the Bachelor of Arts. The calculator adds about $11,800 a year in non-tuition costs, including an $8,531 room-and-board estimate. For Fall 2027 entry, the U of A has approved a 5.5% increase for new international undergraduates, with larger one-off rises for Computing Science (26%, to match Engineering) and Nursing (20%). The best part is that your tuition is locked when you accept your offer, for the standard length of your program plus one year, so you can plan your whole degree budget before you arrive.
Does the University of Alberta accept CBSE, ISC and state board marks?
Yes. The U of A's India page accepts the CBSE and CISCE national boards and all other Indian state boards, which covers Karnataka's II PUC. For early admission, CBSE and CISCE students are assessed on Class X results plus predicted Class XII grades. State board students are assessed on a competitive Class XI average plus Class XII registration or mid-year results. Final admission uses your official Class XII board results.
Can I apply to the University of Alberta from Bangalore with Karnataka PUC marks?
Yes. The U of A accepts all Indian state boards, and Karnataka's II PUC is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). One thing to plan for early: the U of A's rule that 75%+ in Class XII English meets the English requirement applies only to CBSE and CISCE students. PUC students should therefore expect to submit a test such as IELTS Academic (6.5 overall, no band below 6.0). Booking that test early in II PUC keeps your application on schedule.
What is the University of Alberta's world ranking?
The U of A is #96 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and fourth in Canada — its third consecutive year in the world's top 100. Four of its subjects are in the QS global top 10: Petroleum Engineering, Mineral and Mining Engineering, Nursing and Sports-related Subjects. If you are choosing between Canadian universities, the subject ranking for your own field is often the more useful number.
What IELTS score does the University of Alberta need?
Undergraduate entry needs IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0. The U of A also accepts TOEFL iBT (90 with no section below 21 for tests before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall with no band below 4.5 on the new scale), PTE Academic 61 (60 in each skill) and Duolingo 120 (no subscore below 100). Graduate programs use the same minimums, and some programs set higher ones, so check your program's page.
Do I need a provincial attestation letter (PAL) for the University of Alberta?
It depends on your level. Since 1 January 2026, IRCC says master's and doctoral students at a public institution don't need a PAL/TAL, and the U of A is a public university. Undergraduates still need one. Alberta's 2026 allocation is 32,271 study permit applications, so accepting your offer promptly and following the university's PAL instructions early is the smart move.
Can I work in Canada after graduating from the University of Alberta?
Yes. A bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree from the U of A is exempt from the PGWP field-of-study requirement. You will need to show CLB 7 in English across all four skills when you apply. A program of two years or more can lead to a three-year PGWP, and IRCC also grants three years to eligible master's graduates whose program ran at least eight months.
