The University of Auckland is one of the few universities that tells Indian students exactly where they stand. Its 2027 entry table puts CBSE, ISC and three state boards in their own group, with a published percentage for every programme. It also runs a scholarship reserved for Indian passport holders. If you know those two details before you apply, you are already ahead of most applicants.

Founded in 1883, Auckland is New Zealand's largest university and its highest-ranked. It is in New Zealand's biggest city, which is also the country's main business and technology hub. For Indian students planning to study in New Zealand, it combines a globally recognised degree with some of the most generous post-study work rules in the English-speaking world. This guide covers how to study at the University of Auckland as an international student: fees, entry scores, scholarships, visas and careers, with official figures for each.

Auckland has stayed between 65th and 68th in the QS rankings every year from 2024 to 2027, so its reputation is stable rather than a one-year jump. Its 2026 QS subject rankings put Civil and Structural Engineering at 48th, Psychology at =28th and Education at 29th, and Data Science and AI entered the global top 100 for the first time. The university also calls itself New Zealand's largest research organisation.

What Can You Study at Auckland?

1. Engineering

The four-year BE(Hons) is Auckland's flagship undergraduate engineering degree, and Civil and Structural Engineering ranks in the QS global top 50. At postgraduate level you can choose between two degrees. The Master of Engineering Studies is a taught degree built for career development. The Master of Engineering is research-based. Both have a longer 180-point track for three-year graduates. In 2026, Aerospace Engineering also entered the ShanghaiRanking subject top 50.

2. Computer Science, IT and Data Science

Among Indian applicants, the Master of Information Technology stands out. It includes a compulsory 10-week, full-time industry internship worth 60 points and is awarded jointly with the University of Waikato. There are three entry tracks. The 240-point track accepts a bachelor's degree in any subject, which makes it one of the easiest ways into tech in New Zealand for a BCom or BA graduate. The Master of Data Science is for graduates with a science degree and a background in computing, maths and statistics.

3. Business

Auckland's Business Masters run for 15 months across 180 points and require little or no work experience. They cover Applied Finance, Business Analytics, International Business, Management, Marketing and Professional Accounting. Intakes are quarterly, with starts in January, April, July and September. For a fresh Indian graduate, this is often a better option than an MBA.

Worth checking before you shortlist: Auckland's MBA is open to domestic students only. International applicants cannot enrol, whatever some study-abroad listings suggest. If you want a management degree here, look at the Business Masters instead. They were designed for early-career applicants, and they have their own scholarship of up to NZ$24,000.

4. Health and Medical Sciences

Health programmes are taught at the Grafton Campus. You cannot apply straight into Medicine (MBChB), Pharmacy, Optometry or Medical Imaging. Instead, you enter through a first year of BSc, BHSc or Biomedical Science. Knowing this in advance lets you plan the right first-year route from Class XII.

Most popular choices for Indian students: Master of Information Technology, Master of Data Science, Master of Engineering Studies, the Business Masters (Business Analytics, Professional Accounting, Applied Finance), BE(Hons), BCom and BSc in Computer Science.

  • How scores are counted: your best four academic subjects, excluding local languages and non-academic subjects. You also need 70% in English (CBSE and group) or 75% (other state boards).
  • Portfolio or audition is needed for Architecture, Dance and Music Performance.
  • Just below the mark? The University of Auckland International College runs Foundation Studies (6, 8–9 or 12 months, from NZ$29,253 in 2027). Students who meet its standards are guaranteed entry to an Auckland bachelor's degree.

Postgraduate

  • Three-year degrees are accepted, usually on the 180-point track. The shorter 120-point track generally needs a four-year honours degree or an extra postgraduate year.
  • Auckland measures grades as a GPE on a nine-point scale. The Master of Engineering Studies asks for GPE 4.0 and the Master of IT for 4.5. Auckland's own India guide for the Master of IT puts that at about 60–65% from a reputable Indian university. The research Master of Engineering asks for GPE 5.0.
  • Business Masters: any bachelor's degree, with the indicative score for India listed as First Class.
  • Use Auckland's official GPE calculator to convert your marks before you apply. It shows you which track you qualify for straight away.

  • Student Services Fee: NZ$1,132.80 a year in 2026. The 2027 fee will be set in late 2026. Auckland also suggests budgeting about NZ$1,200 a year for books.
  • Three-year graduates: a 180-point master's lasts roughly 1.5 years, so multiply the annual fee by 1.5 when you plan your total budget and education loan.

Turning these figures into a year-by-year budget, and working out whether a 120 or 180-point track suits your degree, is exactly what a first counselling session is for. Talk to us and we will work through it with you.

Scholarships for Indian Students

1. University of Auckland India High Achievers Scholarship
25% of first-year tuition for new international master's students holding an Indian passport, with a minimum GPE of 7.0. There is no separate application: eligible offer-holders are invited to submit a supplementary form. For Semester One or Quarter Two 2027, you must hold an offer by 20 October 2026. Invitations go out on 21 October and results start from 30 November 2026. Fees are paid in full first and the scholarship is credited afterwards.
2. International Student Excellence Scholarship
25% of first-year tuition, open to international master's students of any nationality, with the same invitation-based process. It runs twice a year.
3. International Business Masters Scholarship
Up to NZ$24,000 for the Business Masters in Applied Finance, Business Analytics, International Business, Management, Marketing or Professional Accounting.
4. Dean's Asia Scholarship (Business School)
For first-time undergraduate students from Asia. It covers tuition for up to 360 points of a BCom, BProp or related conjoint degree, plus the compulsory international student health insurance.
5. Faculty and specialist awards
These include the School of Medical Sciences International Masters Scholarship (up to NZ$20,000 a year), the Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Leader Scholarship (up to NZ$30,000 for the Master of International Business), the Auckland Law School Postgraduate Award (NZ$10,000) and the Colombo Plan Scholarship in Engineering (NZ$3,000). India is a Colombo Plan member. There are also Foundation Pathway High Achiever Awards of up to NZ$20,000.

Timing matters more than anything else. Auckland's high-achiever awards are offered to applicants who already hold an offer by a set date, not to those who apply first. For a Semester One 2027 start, that date is 20 October 2026. Some sites still quote a flat NZ$10,000 for these awards; Auckland's current pages say 25% of first-year tuition. That is worth well over NZ$10,000 on a 2027 engineering or IT fee, so a complete, early application can pay off.

Intakes and Deadlines for 2027

IntakeStartsInternational application deadline
Semester One 2027Monday 1 March 2027Postgraduate: apply by 1 December 2026. Undergraduate: 8 December 2026 for most programmes (Nursing: 1 November 2026)

Business Masters Q1 / Q2 / Q3 / Q4 202718 Jan / 12 Apr / 5 Jul / 27 Sep1 Nov 2026 / 1 Feb / 1 May / 1 Jul 2027

Although the postgraduate deadline is December, Auckland asks international applicants to apply by 1 December 2026 so there is time for the visa. Because the India High Achievers Scholarship needs an offer by 20 October, the best plan is to aim for an October application.

  • The funds are in addition to tuition. You show one year's fees paid, NZ$20,000 for each year of living costs, and money for your flight home.
  • Work rights increased on 3 November 2025, from 20 to 25 hours a week during term. Research master's and PhD students have no hours limit, as long as they keep studying full-time.
  • Partners: if you study a level 9 master's degree, your partner can usually apply for an open work visa. Partners and children apply separately, not on your application.
  • Health and character: Indian applicants staying more than six months usually need a chest X-ray, and a police certificate if the total stay is 24 months or more.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

  • Karnataka board students are in Auckland's top group. Auckland's 2027 entry table puts the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB), which runs the II PUC exams, alongside CBSE, ISC and the Maharashtra and West Bengal boards. That means 75% as the baseline, with 70% in English, calculated on your best four academic subjects. BCom needs 81%, and BE(Hons) needs 85% overall with 85% in Physics and Maths.
  • Graduates of Karnataka universities: Auckland converts your marks into its nine-point GPE rather than using a published list of Indian institutions. Graduates of VTU, Bangalore University, Manipal or elsewhere should use Auckland's GPE calculator to check which master's track they qualify for, and for the India High Achievers Scholarship threshold of GPE 7.0.
  • Your visa application is made online. If Immigration New Zealand asks for your passport, VFS Global handles it. In September 2026, VFS lists the Bengaluru New Zealand Visa Application Centre as temporarily closed, with Mumbai, New Delhi and Chandigarh open. Passports can also be sent to a centre by courier. Check the VFS New Zealand India page before you book.
  • Getting there: we could not confirm any nonstop flights from Kempegowda International Airport to Auckland, so plan for at least one connection, usually through an Asian hub. Build that extra time into your plans for arriving before orientation.
  • Talk it through in person: Falcon Nova's office is in Hebbal, North Bangalore (7th floor, Kirloskar Business Park). You can book free counselling there or online.

Life in Auckland

The City Campus is in central Auckland, a short walk from the CBD. The Grafton Campus is home to medical and health sciences. Auckland ranks 26th in the QS Best Student Cities 2027, which is first in New Zealand. The same ranking puts it 91st of 150 for affordability, so it helps to budget carefully.

Accommodation (2027 weekly rate, NZ$)Rate
First-year halls: Grafton, O'Rorke, University Hall Towers$550
Waipārūrū Hall$580
University Hall Apartments$385
Carlaw Park$345–375
Te Tirohanga o te Tōangaroa$330–360

Hall rates include utilities, Wi-Fi and membership of the Hiwa Recreation Centre. Applications for Semester One 2027 opened on 1 August 2026. Auckland does not publish a first-year accommodation guarantee, so apply for housing the day you accept your offer. The university's international pages also include halal facilities.

Career Outcomes and Staying On

  • Strong graduate reputation: Auckland reports No.1 in New Zealand for graduate outcomes in the QS Graduate Outcomes 2027 ranking, and QS singled out employability as one of its strengths.
  • Built-in industry experience: the Master of IT's 10-week internship gives you New Zealand work experience before you graduate.
  • Post-Study Work Visa: a master's (at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand) earns three years of open work rights. A bachelor's earns a visa as long as the time you spent studying it in New Zealand. You can hold this visa only once, need NZ$5,000 in funds to apply, and must apply within three months of your student visa expiring.
  • Postgraduate diplomas: a PGDip on its own gives a visa as long as your study period, so for most students a full master's is the stronger choice. Online-only Auckland programmes do not qualify.
  • Career support: Auckland's Career Development and Employability Services has a dedicated section for international students.

A change coming on 16 November 2026: Immigration New Zealand is extending Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to level 7 graduate diplomas studied full-time, for applicants who already hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas. That means Indian graduates too, with a visa of up to one year. Read the final rules closer to the date, but it is a useful extra option.

Is Auckland Right for You?

Auckland suits Indian students who want New Zealand's highest-ranked university, New Zealand's largest job market on the doorstep, and a clear, published entry standard. It is a particularly good fit for engineering, IT, data science and business master's applicants with three-year degrees, because its 180-point tracks were designed for them. If your plan depends on keeping costs low, compare Auckland's fees and city costs with other New Zealand universities first. We can help you make that comparison so you choose with confidence.

Aiming for Auckland? Start Before 20 October

Auckland rewards applicants who plan early: the right 120, 180 or 240-point track for your degree, a GPE that clears the India High Achievers threshold, and an offer in hand before the scholarship cut-off. Falcon Nova Consultants has helped hundreds of Indian students turn applications like this into offers. On top of tuition, Immigration New Zealand asks you to show NZ$20,000 a year for living costs for your student visa.
What percentage do I need in Class XII for the University of Auckland?
For Semester One 2027, Auckland sorts Indian boards into two groups. CBSE, ISC and the Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal state boards start at 75% in your best four academic subjects, with 70% in English. Other state boards start at 80%, with 75% in English. Scores go up by programme. BCom needs 81%. BE(Hons) needs 85% overall and 85% in Physics and Maths. Most BSc majors need 80%. If you are from another state board, add a few points to each of these.
Does the University of Auckland accept a three-year Indian bachelor's degree for a master's?
Yes, on the right track. Many Auckland master's degrees come in 120, 180 and 240-point versions. With a three-year degree you normally take the 180-point (roughly 18-month) route. The Master of Engineering Studies, for example, states *"180 points for candidates with a three-year bachelor's degree."* The Master of Information Technology goes further: its 240-point version accepts a bachelor's degree in any subject.
Can I apply to the University of Auckland from Bangalore with Karnataka PUC marks?
Yes. Auckland's 2027 entry table lists the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, which runs the II PUC exams, in the same group as CBSE and ISC. The baseline is 75% in your best four academic subjects, with 70% in English. Programmes set higher scores, such as 81% for the BCom and 85% overall with 85% in Physics and Maths for BE(Hons). Students from other Indian state boards need a few more points.
What IELTS score do I need for the University of Auckland?
The minimum is IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5, for undergraduate study. For postgraduate study it is 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0. Some programmes ask for more. PTE Academic (50 and 58) and TOEFL iBT (80 and 90, writing 21) are also accepted. Duolingo is not listed among Auckland's accepted tests, so plan on IELTS, PTE or TOEFL.
Are there scholarships for Indian students at the University of Auckland?
Yes. There is one scholarship made for Indian passport holders: the University of Auckland India High Achievers Scholarship. It pays 25% of first-year tuition to new international master's students with a GPE of 7.0 or higher. There is no separate application: eligible offer-holders are invited to fill in a form. For Semester One 2027 you need to hold an offer by 20 October 2026. Undergraduates can look at the Dean's Asia Scholarship, which covers BCom or BProp tuition for first-time students from Asia.
How does the New Zealand Post-Study Work Visa work after Auckland?
Yes. A master's degree with at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand leads to a three-year Post-Study Work Visa with open work rights. A bachelor's degree gives a visa as long as the time you studied it in New Zealand. You can hold a Post-Study Work Visa only once, and you must apply within three months of your student visa expiring. While you study, you can work up to 25 hours a week during term and full-time in scheduled holidays.
