Victoria University of Wellington changed its international scholarships in 2025, and many study-abroad sites have not caught up. The old Tongarewa Scholarship has gone. It has been replaced by automatic awards: NZ$15,000 for new undergraduates and NZ$10,000 for new master's students, with no separate application. Once you know that, you can put your effort into a strong programme application instead of an essay for a scholarship that no longer exists.

Founded in 1897 and known in Māori as Te Herenga Waka, Wellington is the university of New Zealand's capital city. It has three campuses in the city centre: Kelburn, Pipitea and Te Aro. Its location gives students close links to government, law and the creative industries. For Indian students planning to study in New Zealand, and especially those applying from Bangalore and Karnataka, this guide covers how to study at Victoria University of Wellington as an international student, using official figures.

What Can You Study at Wellington?

1. Law

The four-year LLB and the one-year coursework LLM are taught at the Pipitea campus, close to Parliament, the courts and government departments. For an LLM applicant, few places offer this much access to how law and policy are actually made. Note that the LLM has a higher English requirement (IELTS 7.0, no band below 6.5).

2. Public Policy, Government and International Relations

The Master of Public Policy and Master of Public Management (NZ$61,700 each, about 1.5 years) are built for the capital. The MPP asks for two years of relevant work experience. The one-year Master of International Relations (NZ$60,900) needs a bachelor's degree or equivalent, so it is open to strong fresh graduates.

3. AI, Software and Computer Science

The Master of Software Development is designed for graduates whose degree is not in computer science, and asks for a B average. This makes it a good route into tech for BCom, BSc or engineering graduates from other fields. For computing graduates, there is the Master of Computer Science (1.5 years), the Master of Artificial Intelligence and the Master of Data Science.

4. Business

Wellington's business school holds the Triple Crown of accreditations. The Master of Professional Business Analysis (B- average), the one-year Master of Global Business and the Master of Professional Accounting are popular with Indian graduates. The university's MBA is an Executive MBA requiring five years of work experience and GMAT 550 or higher, so fresh graduates usually choose one of the specialist master's instead.

Most popular choices for Indian students: Master of Software Development, Master of Artificial Intelligence, Master of Computer Science, Master of Professional Business Analysis, Master of International Relations, Master of Public Policy, the LLM, and the BCom and BE(Hons).

  • Other routes in: one year of university study, the IB Diploma (24 points), or Foundation Studies delivered by UP International College for the university. Foundation students receive a conditional offer for their degree at the start, which becomes unconditional when they pass.
  • Foundation options: Accelerated (6 months, IELTS 6.0, NZ$23,032), Fast-track (8–9 months, IELTS 5.5, NZ$28,649) and Standard (12 months, IELTS 5.0, NZ$36,851), plus resource and enrolment fees. There are four starts a year, and the 2027 orientation days are 18 January, 12 April, 5 July and 27 September.

Postgraduate

  • Master of Professional Business Analysis: a bachelor's degree with at least a B- average.
  • Master of Software Development: a bachelor's degree not in computer science, with at least a B average.
  • Master of Computer Science: a bachelor's degree in the same subject area.
  • Master of International Relations: a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Master of Public Policy: a bachelor's degree plus two years of relevant experience.
  • Three-year Indian degrees and grade conversion: Wellington does not publish a single India-specific rule, so ask admissions how your degree and percentage will be assessed before you apply. We can help you prepare that question.

These figures are the university's 2026 estimates. Fees for 2027 had not been published when this guide was written, so confirm the figure for your programme when you apply. Compulsory student levies are about NZ$1,225 a year. Many master's here have a single fee for the whole programme, so a 1.5-year degree does not cost 1.5 times a yearly fee. Check how your programme is charged before you compare universities. Once you have a shortlist, talk to us and we will work through the full cost with you.

Scholarships for Indian Students

1. VUW Undergraduate International Scholarship: NZ$15,000
Credited against first-year tuition for new full-fee international students in full-time, on-campus bachelor's study, including students progressing from the university's Foundation or English for Academic Purposes programmes. It is automatic: you are assessed when you apply for your programme, and the deadline is your programme deadline.
2. VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship: NZ$10,000
Credited against one year of tuition for new students in a 120, 180 or 240-point master's degree or a 120-point postgraduate diploma. It is automatic, and any award is shown in your offer letter.
3. Who is excluded
Both awards exclude government-sponsored students, students receiving credit transfer, and exchange or study-abroad students.

An update most sites have missed: the university confirms that the Tongarewa International Scholarship, the International Alumni Fees Waiver and the NZ International School-Leaver Grant are not offered from 2026 onwards. They were replaced in August 2025 by the two automatic scholarships above. You no longer need to write a separate scholarship essay. A complete, on-time programme application is what gets you considered.

  • The funds are in addition to tuition: one year's fees paid, NZ$20,000 for each year of living costs, and money for your flight home.
  • Work hours increased on 3 November 2025, from 20 to 25 hours a week during term. Research master's and PhD students have no hours limit, as long as they keep studying full-time.
  • Partners: if you study a level 9 master's, your partner can usually apply for an open work visa. They apply separately.
  • Health and character: Indian applicants staying more than six months usually need a chest X-ray, and a police certificate if the total stay is 24 months or more.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

  • Karnataka board students start on the same footing as CBSE and ISC students. The university lists the Karnataka state board in its top group, needing 75% overall from your best four academic subjects. Karnataka's II PUC exams are now run by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). 65% in II PUC English meets the undergraduate English requirement, so you may not need IELTS.
  • Graduates of Karnataka universities: the university does not publish an India-specific list of institutions or grade conversions for master's entry. Whether you studied at VTU, Bangalore University or another Karnataka university, ask admissions how your degree will be assessed before you apply.
  • Your visa application is made online. If Immigration New Zealand asks for your passport, VFS Global handles it. In September 2026, VFS lists the Bengaluru New Zealand Visa Application Centre as temporarily closed, with Mumbai, New Delhi and Chandigarh open. Passports can also be sent to a centre by courier. Check the VFS New Zealand India page before you book.
  • Getting there: we could not confirm any nonstop flights from Kempegowda International Airport to Wellington, so plan for at least one connection, usually through an Asian or Australian hub. It is worth building that extra travel time into your arrival plan.
  • Talk it through in person: Falcon Nova's office is in Hebbal, North Bangalore (7th floor, Kirloskar Business Park). You can book free counselling there or online.

Life in Wellington

All three campuses are within walking distance of the city centre. Kelburn is the original hillside campus, Pipitea is next to Parliament and home to law and government studies, and Te Aro is the third city campus. Wellington is also a creative city, home to Weta Workshop and the university's Miramar Creative Centre.

Housing type (2026 estimates, per year)Accommodation (NZ$)
Catered hall of residenceAbout 19,999
Self-catered hall14,479 (plus about 3,200 food)
Private student flat10,970 (plus food and about 1,480 transport)
Homestay11,700 (plus about 1,480 transport)

The university also budgets for insurance (about NZ$855), books (NZ$1,000) and entertainment. There are 15 halls of residence. Boulcott Hall closes from 2027. Hall applications for 2027 opened on 1 August 2026, but halls usually receive more applications than they have beds and no place is guaranteed, so apply as soon as you accept your offer.

Career Outcomes and Staying On

  • Employability: QS ranks the university in the top 200 worldwide for Employment Outcomes. Its Careers and Employment team offers CV checks, career advice, internships and networking events.
  • Capital-city networks: the university's location gives students close links to government, industry and national organisations, which is especially useful in law, policy and public management.
  • Post-Study Work Visa: a master's (at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand) earns three years of open work rights. A bachelor's earns a visa as long as the time you studied it in New Zealand. You can hold this visa only once, need NZ$5,000 in funds to apply, and must apply within three months of your student visa expiring.
  • Postgraduate diplomas: a PGDip on its own earns a visa as long as your study period, so a full master's is usually the stronger choice.

A change coming on 16 November 2026: Immigration New Zealand is extending Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to level 7 graduate diplomas studied full-time, for applicants who already hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas. The visa lasts up to one year. Check the final rules closer to the date, but it gives Indian graduates another option.
