Two details give Indian applicants to the University of Otago a head start. First, if you studied under CBSE, CISCE or the Maharashtra, Karnataka or West Bengal boards and scored 70% in Class XII English, Otago may not need an IELTS score from you for undergraduate entry. Second, its NZ$15,000 Global Scholarships are open to Indian passport holders and assessed automatically, with no limit on the number of awards. Knowing both before you apply puts you ahead of many applicants.

Founded in 1869, Otago is New Zealand's oldest university and its second-highest ranked. It is based in Dunedin, a student city in the South Island. Otago is best known for health sciences, dentistry and a residential student life that few universities can match. For Indian students who want to study in New Zealand, this guide covers how to study at the University of Otago as an international student: fees, entry, scholarships, visas and careers, using official figures.

Otago's subject rankings stand out. In the QS 2026 subject rankings it is #1 in New Zealand for Sports-related subjects (#22 in the world), Anatomy and Physiology (#36), Dentistry (#50) and Hospitality and Leisure Management (#50). Its teachers have won the Prime Minister's Supreme Award for Teaching Excellence in 8 of the past 11 years. The number of Indian students has also grown quickly, to 171 in 2025, making India Otago's third-largest source of international students.

What Can You Study at Otago?

1. Health Sciences, Medicine and Dentistry

Health sciences are central to Otago. Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) is the entry route to Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy. The MB ChB regulations allow a limited number of second-year places for international students. To be eligible for selection, you take all seven required HSFY papers and average at least 65% in your best seven. There is no mid-year start for HSFY, and international applications for March 2027 close on 15 November 2026.

2. Business: Otago Business School

The Otago Business School holds triple accreditation (AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS). The Master of Business (MBus) takes about a year across 180 points, with specialisations including Business Analytics (Otago's route into analytics), Finance and Marketing. The on-campus MBA runs for 15 months from February and requires a GMAT or MBA Admission Test result.

3. Computer Science, AI and Data Science

Otago offers the MSc(Applied) and MSc(Coursework) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. There are 180-point options, and the AI and Computer Science coursework degrees can start in November 2026. At undergraduate level it offers a BSc in Computer Science or Data Science and a BE(Hons) in Software Engineering.

4. Public Health and Research

The two-year Master of Public Health is popular with Indian health graduates. Otago's research degrees are affordable because international PhD students pay domestic fees, and its Doctoral Scholarship adds a stipend of NZ$34,128 a year.

Most popular choices for Indian students: Master of Business (Business Analytics, Finance), MSc(Applied) in Computer Science, Data Science or AI, the Master of Public Health, the BCom and BSc, and Health Sciences First Year for students aiming at Medicine or Dentistry.

Entry Requirements for Indian Students

Undergraduate

BoardOverall averageEnglish
CBSE, ISC, Karnataka, Maharashtra or West Bengal State Board75%60%
All other state boards80%65%
  • This is the minimum for entry. Some programmes ask for more, and professional health programmes select students after HSFY.
  • Just below the mark? Otago's Foundation Studies Certificate (two 13-week semesters, 2027 fees NZ$32,341–33,637) accepts CBSE, ISC and Karnataka, Maharashtra or West Bengal board students with 60% in their best four relevant subjects and 55% in English. Other state boards need 75% and 75% in English.
  • Close to the mark: the Diplomas in Arts, Commerce and Science lead into the second year of a bachelor's degree. They have a February intake only, and offshore applications are due 15 November.

Postgraduate

  • Master of Business: a bachelor's degree with at least a B average. Accounting and Finance, and Finance, need a science or quantitative degree.
  • MPH: a bachelor's degree, or a professional qualification needing at least three years of tertiary study, with at least a B average.
  • MBA: a degree, professional qualification or relevant management experience, plus a satisfactory GMAT or MBA Admission Test result.
  • Three-year Indian degrees: Otago's general requirement is a relevant bachelor's degree, but it does not publish a single rule for three-year degrees. Confirm how your degree is assessed for your chosen programme before you apply. It only takes one email.

You may not need a test at all. For undergraduate entry, Otago accepts 70% in Class XII English from CBSE, CISCE or the Maharashtra, Karnataka or West Bengal boards (85% from other state boards), if the result is within two years of your start date. For postgraduate entry, a degree taught in English can count if your university is on Otago's approved India list, which has about 106 institutions, including the IITs, IISc and AIIMS. Some programmes set higher requirements. For example, the LLM needs IELTS 7.5.

Scholarships for Indian Students

1. Global Scholarship (undergraduate)
NZ$15,000 towards first-year tuition. Indian passport holders are eligible, offers are unlimited, and you are assessed automatically when admitted, with no separate application. For offshore applicants, the closing dates are 10 December for a February start and 30 April for a July start. It is not normally combined with another undergraduate entrance scholarship; you receive whichever is worth more.
2. Global Master's Scholarship
NZ$15,000 for the first 12 months of full-time, on-campus study starting in 2027 or 2028. Indian passport holders are eligible and assessment is automatic. It covers the MBus (all subjects), MPH, MSc(Applied) and MSc(Coursework) (all subjects), and several other master's degrees, but not the MBA. The closing dates are 10 December (Semester 1), 30 April (Semester 2) and 15 September (November start).
3. International Academic Excellence Scholarship
About NZ$35,000 over three years for undergraduates. Year 1 covers residential college fees (about NZ$19,000), and Years 2–3 pay NZ$7,000 a year, normally if you keep a GPA of 7.0 (A-). It is awarded by invitation after admission, and you have two weeks to apply once invited.
4. Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship for International Students
NZ$10,000 towards first-year tuition, assessed automatically.
5. Research scholarships
The International Master's Research Scholarship pays a NZ$18,204 stipend plus a tuition waiver of up to NZ$35,000 for one year. The Doctoral Scholarship pays a NZ$34,128 annual stipend plus a domestic tuition fee waiver for 36 months.

Focus on getting your application in on time. The Global Scholarships are automatic and unlimited, so the main thing is to apply before the scholarship closing date: 10 December for a February 2027 start. For undergraduates, the offshore application deadline of 15 November 2026 comes first. Apply by then and you will be considered for both your place and the scholarship.

  • The funds are in addition to tuition: one year's fees paid, NZ$20,000 for each year of living costs, and money for your flight home.
  • Work hours increased on 3 November 2025, from 20 to 25 hours a week during term. Research master's and PhD students have no hours limit, as long as they keep studying full-time.
  • Partners: if you study a level 9 master's, your partner can usually apply for an open work visa. They apply separately.
  • Health and character: Indian applicants staying more than six months usually need a chest X-ray, and a police certificate if the total stay is 24 months or more.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka

  • Karnataka board students are in Otago's top group. Otago lists the Karnataka State Board alongside CBSE and ISC, needing 75% overall and 60% in English. Karnataka's II PUC exams are now run by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). 70% in II PUC English can replace IELTS for undergraduate entry if the result is within two years of your start date.
  • Karnataka universities are on Otago's English-medium list. For postgraduate entry, Otago's approved list of Indian institutions names Bangalore University, Christ University, IISc Bangalore, JNCASR, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, NITK Surathkal, the University of Mysore and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). If your English-medium degree comes from one of these, it may meet the English requirement without a test. Confirm the conditions for your programme when you apply.
  • Your visa application is made online. If Immigration New Zealand asks for your passport, VFS Global handles it. In September 2026, VFS lists the Bengaluru New Zealand Visa Application Centre as temporarily closed, with Mumbai, New Delhi and Chandigarh open. Passports can also be sent to a centre by courier. Check the VFS New Zealand India page before you book.
  • Getting there: we could not confirm any nonstop flights from Kempegowda International Airport to New Zealand. Expect at least one international connection, plus a domestic flight to Dunedin, and build the extra travel time into your plans for arriving before Orientation Week.
  • Talk it through in person: Falcon Nova's office is in Hebbal, North Bangalore (7th floor, Kirloskar Business Park). You can book free counselling there or online.

Life in Dunedin

Otago describes itself as New Zealand's only true residential university. Most students live within 1 km of campus, and there are more than 140 clubs. In student surveys cited by Otago, residential colleges scored 98% satisfaction and libraries 99%. There are 15 residential colleges, mostly for first-year students, and all of them are fully catered.

Living option (40 weeks, estimated from 2025 costs)Total (NZ$)
Residential college27,192
UniFlats24,439
Otago's recommended living-cost range22,000–27,000 per year

Demand for colleges is high and Otago does not publish a first-year guarantee. Offshore students should apply by 1 December 2026 for 2027, and a waitlist opens from 6 October. It is worth applying for your college as soon as you have your offer. Undergraduates who receive the International Academic Excellence Scholarship have their first-year college fees covered.

Career Outcomes and Staying On

  • Graduate outcomes: Otago reports that 95% of its graduates go directly into work or further study, based on its Graduate Opinion Survey. It also improved on employer reputation and employment outcomes in QS 2027.
  • Career support: the Career Development Centre offers one-to-one advisers and the CareerHub jobs platform.
  • Post-Study Work Visa: a master's (at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand) earns three years of open work rights. A bachelor's earns a visa as long as the time you studied it in New Zealand. You can hold this visa only once, need NZ$5,000 in funds to apply, and must apply within three months of your student visa expiring. Doctoral graduates have up to six months to apply.
  • Postgraduate diplomas: a PGDip on its own earns a visa as long as your study period, so a full master's is usually the stronger choice.

A change coming on 16 November 2026: Immigration New Zealand is extending Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to level 7 graduate diplomas studied full-time, for applicants who already hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas. The visa lasts up to one year. Check the final rules closer to the date, but it gives Indian graduates another option.
