Some universities make scholarships hard to find. The University of Canterbury lists three separate awards for Indian citizens. One is an India High Achievers Scholarship. Another is a NZ$10,000 Business School award that is assessed automatically. The third is a NZ$15,000 first-year scholarship open to all international school leavers. Knowing about all three, and when each one closes, puts you ahead of most applicants before you write a word.
Founded in 1873, Canterbury is New Zealand's second-oldest university and home to the country's first engineering school. Ernest Rutherford, the scientist who later split the atom, is one of its alumni. It was also the first New Zealand university to earn a QS 5-Star rating, in 2011. For Indian students planning to study in New Zealand, it offers strong engineering and technology programmes, fees below many of its peers, and a large green campus in Christchurch. This guide covers how to study at the University of Canterbury as an international student, using official figures.
The University of Canterbury at a Glance
In the 2026 QS subject rankings, Canterbury placed Geography in the global top 50, Linguistics 61st, and Civil and Structural Engineering and Hospitality and Leisure Management in the top 100. Its 2025 annual report also shows international enrolment up 11%, so a growing number of international students are choosing it.
What Can You Study at Canterbury?
1. Engineering
Engineering is what Canterbury is best known for. Work placements are built into the BE(Hons), and the school has strong industry links, new facilities and specialist programmes such as Forestry Science and Product Design. At postgraduate level, the Master of Engineering Studies is taught and the Master of Engineering is research-based. Both are 120-point programmes at NZ$54,600 in total for 2027.
The engineering pathway worth knowing about: Canterbury's accelerated international pathway can take you through the BE(Hons) in as little as 3.25 years. Entry needs 85% overall in ISC or AISSC (CBSE), with at least 60% in English. You start with remote Python study from India in July and August, then arrive on campus around 31 August. The first quarter-year costs an estimated NZ$24,770 in tuition for 2027 (60 points). Because you graduate sooner, you can start working and earning sooner.
2. Data Science, AI and Computing
Canterbury offers a Bachelor of Data Science and, at postgraduate level, the Master of Applied Data Science, the Master of Artificial Intelligence and the Master of Human Interface Technology, which draws on its research in how people interact with technology. From 2027 it also offers a new Master of AI and Digital Education. Its entry requirements also list a Professional Master of Computer Science.
3. Business
UC Business School offers the BCom, and from 2026 a Master of Business Management, which replaced the Master of Business. It also offers the Master of Business Information Systems, the Master of Professional Accounting, the MCom and an MBA (NZ$65,700 in total for 2027). The MBIS and Master of Business Management have lower entry thresholds than most other taught master's. That makes them a good option for commerce graduates who want to move into technology or management.
4. Sciences and Research
Canterbury's research strengths include Antarctic science, nanotechnology and brain research, supported by field stations around the South Island. The 240-point MSc is charged at NZ$47,600 per 120 points in 2027.
Check this before you shortlist: Canterbury lists the Master of Engineering Management as offered exclusively online through UC Online. Indian students who need a student visa should choose an on-campus programme such as the Master of Engineering Studies or the Master of Applied Data Science. Online study also does not count towards a Post-Study Work Visa.
Entry Requirements for Indian Students
Undergraduate
- Accelerated BE(Hons): 85% overall in ISC or AISSC, with at least 60% in English.
- Other bachelor's degrees: Canterbury publishes its India requirements through its CheckWhatYouNeed tool, and the thresholds vary by programme. Check your board and subjects there, or ask us to check them with you.
- Pathways through UC International College (UCIC): Indian students can join the Diploma in University Studies, which is equivalent to UC's first year, with 60% or more across four subjects in Class XII. Engineering needs Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Students who finished Class X can join the Certificate in Foundation Studies (8 months, NZ$28,842 in 2027).
Postgraduate: The Tiered India Table
| Programme group | Elite institutions* | Section 1 | Section 2 | Section 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taught master's: Applied Data Science, AI, Engineering Studies, MBA, Professional MCS | 55% | 60% | 65% | 70% |
| MBIS, Master of Business Management | 50% | 55% | 60% | 65% |
| Research ME, MCom | 55–60% | 60–65% | 65–70% | 70–75% |
*Canterbury's 'Elite' tier covers the IITs, NITs, University of Delhi, University of Mumbai, University of Calcutta and Savitribai Phule Pune University. Its published document does not list which universities fall into Sections 1–3, so confirm your university's tier with Canterbury before you apply. Entry is based on your overall degree result, and Canterbury converts GPAs to percentages with the formula (GPA − 0.5) × 10. The requirement is a completed undergraduate degree in a relevant field. If you hold a three-year degree, confirm the exact entry route for your programme with the university early.
English Language Requirements
| Test | Undergraduate | Postgraduate |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | 6.5, no band below 6.0 |
| PTE Academic | 50, no skill below 42 | 58, no skill below 50 |
| Duolingo | 105, no band below 95 | 120, no band below 105 |

| TOEFL iBT (new scale, from 21 Jan 2026) | 4.0 overall | 4.5 overall |
Scores must come from one sitting within two years of your start date. TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted. Canterbury accepts Duolingo, which not every New Zealand university does. If you are close to the postgraduate score, completing UCIC's one-semester Pre-Master's meets the English requirement for most UC master's.

Scholarships for Indian Students
- 1. University of Canterbury India High Achievers Scholarship
- NZ$5,000 off first-year tuition for Indian citizens starting at UC. For Semester 1 2027, applications opened on 3 August and close on 23 October 2026. For Semester 2 2027, they run from 3 March to 30 April 2027. Canterbury describes it as being for new international students, so confirm with the university that it covers your level of study.
- 2. UC Business School International School Leavers Scholarship
- NZ$10,000 off tuition for Indian citizens admitted to the BCom with CBSE (AISSC), ISC (CISCE) or an Indian state board. You are assessed automatically, and it can be combined with the Dean's Award, First Year and High Achievers scholarships.
- 3. UC International First Year Scholarship (Offshore)
- NZ$15,000 towards tuition for students who completed their school-leaving qualification overseas or at UCIC. For a Semester 1 2027 start it closes on 31 October 2026, and for Semester 2 on 15 April.
- 4. UC Dean's Award
- Help with international fees for full-fee international students in their first year, at any level, while funding lasts. There is no fixed value. You are considered automatically when you apply through a recruiter or for any international scholarship.
- 5. Research funding
- The UC Doctoral Scholarship is open to PhD applicants with a GPA equivalent to 7.0 or higher.
Plan around the late-October deadlines: for a February 2027 start, the India High Achievers Scholarship closes on 23 October 2026 and the First Year Scholarship on 31 October 2026. That is weeks before the 1 December application deadline. An Indian BCom applicant who applies early could be considered for the First Year, School Leavers and High Achievers awards together. Canterbury says any scholarship still showing old dates has not yet been confirmed for the current year, so check each one when you apply.
Intakes and Deadlines for 2027
| Intake | Lectures start | International application deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 2027 | 22 February 2027 | 1 December 2026 |
| Semester 2 2027 | 19 July 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
| Accelerated BE(Hons) pathway | About 31 August (after remote study in July–August) | Confirm with UC |
Some programmes close earlier than these dates, and applying late leaves little time for your visa. Applying in October gives you time for the scholarship deadlines, your offer and your visa.
Your Student Visa: The New Zealand Essentials
- The funds are in addition to tuition: one year's fees paid, NZ$20,000 for each year of living costs, and money for your flight home.
- Work hours increased on 3 November 2025, from 20 to 25 hours a week during term. Research master's and PhD students have no hours limit, as long as they keep studying full-time.
- Partners: if you study a level 9 master's degree, your partner can usually apply for an open work visa. They apply separately.
- Health and character: Indian applicants staying more than six months usually need a chest X-ray, and a police certificate if the total stay is 24 months or more.
Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka
- Karnataka PUC marks: check your route first. The accelerated BE(Hons) pathway names ISC and AISSC (CBSE) at 85% overall. Canterbury's published materials do not state how it treats marks from the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB), which runs the II PUC exams. Karnataka board students should check the CheckWhatYouNeed tool or ask admissions to confirm their requirement. UCIC's Diploma in University Studies, which leads into UC's second year, lists a 60% Class XII standard.
- Karnataka universities and the tier table: Canterbury's published 'Elite' tier names the IITs and NITs, which means NITK Surathkal graduates are in the Elite tier, plus four universities outside Karnataka. It does not say where VTU, Bangalore University, Manipal or other Karnataka institutions fall in Sections 1–3. Ask Canterbury which tier your university is in, because the difference between tiers can be 10 to 15 percentage points.
- Your visa application is made online. If Immigration New Zealand asks for your passport, VFS Global handles it. In September 2026, VFS lists the Bengaluru New Zealand Visa Application Centre as temporarily closed, with Mumbai, New Delhi and Chandigarh open. Passports can also be sent to a centre by courier. Check the VFS New Zealand India page before you book.
- Getting there: we could not confirm any nonstop flights from Kempegowda International Airport to Christchurch, so plan for at least one connection, usually through an Asian or Australian hub. Build the extra travel time into your arrival plan.
- Talk it through in person: Falcon Nova's office is in Hebbal, North Bangalore (7th floor, Kirloskar Business Park). You can book free counselling there or online.
Life in Christchurch
The Ilam campus covers 76 hectares, with the Ōtākaro/Avon River running through it and 15 cafés, bars and places to eat. Christchurch is a flat, green city that is easy to get around by bike. Canterbury publishes its own weekly budget estimates, updated in July 2026:
| Living option | Estimated weekly cost (NZ$) | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Hall of residence | About $525 | Ilam Student Accommodation self-catered room at $302/week, 48-week contract |
| Flatting | About $436 | $200/week rent in a shared four-bedroom Ilam house |
Hall prices range from NZ$199–358 a week self-catered to NZ$288–827 a week catered, and Canterbury estimates about NZ$3,505 in one-off costs. First-year halls are aimed at school leavers aged 17–19. Students aged 20 or older are pointed towards Ilam Student Accommodation, and there is a Postgraduate Flexi Start option. Canterbury does not publish a first-year accommodation guarantee for degree students, so apply for housing as soon as you accept your offer.
Career Outcomes and Staying On
- Employability: Canterbury is #2 in New Zealand for employability outcomes in the QS 2027 rankings, and it has more than 3,000 employer connections.
- Career support: the Te Pokapū Rapuara Centre for Employability and Career Development runs internship and start-up programmes. Canterbury also publishes an annual graduate-destinations dashboard, so you can see where graduates in your subject go.
- Post-Study Work Visa: a master's (at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand) earns three years of open work rights. A bachelor's earns a visa as long as the time you studied it in New Zealand. You can hold this visa only once, need NZ$5,000 in funds to apply, and must apply within three months of your student visa expiring.
- Postgraduate diplomas: a PGDip on its own earns a visa as long as your study period, so a full master's is usually the stronger choice.
A change coming on 16 November 2026: Immigration New Zealand is extending Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to level 7 graduate diplomas studied full-time, for applicants who already hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas. The visa lasts up to one year. Check the final rules closer to the date, but it gives Indian graduates another option.
Is Canterbury Right for You?
Canterbury suits Indian students who want New Zealand's oldest engineering school, strong data science and AI options, and 2027 tuition that is lower than many of its New Zealand peers. Its India-specific scholarships and its tiered postgraduate table, which gives graduates of top Indian institutions a lower threshold, make it a good choice for well-prepared applicants. If you want to be in New Zealand's largest job market, compare it with the North Island universities too. We can help you weigh the options.
Build Your Canterbury Application Around the October Deadlines
