Here is the insight that puts an Indian applicant ahead at the University of Calgary before they write a single essay: UCalgary names India as an English-language-exempt country. If you have studied for three years in India, you can meet its undergraduate English requirement without sitting IELTS at all. Pair that with a published, per-course fee schedule, two $20,000 international entrance awards and a paid 12- to 16-month engineering internship programme, and Calgary becomes one of the most transparent options for Indian families planning to study in Canada.
UCalgary was founded in 1966, with roots going back to the early 1900s, and describes its ambition plainly: to be "a global intellectual hub in Canada's most enterprising city" and one of Canada's top five research universities. It is a member of the U15 group of research-intensive Canadian universities, with 14 faculties, 250+ programmes and four main campuses — Main, Downtown, Foothills and Spy Hill. This guide covers what it takes to study at the University of Calgary as an international student, with every figure taken from UCalgary's own pages or the Government of Canada.
University of Calgary at a Glance
What Can You Study at UCalgary?
Calgary is Canada's energy capital, and the university's strongest reputations line up with the city's economy: engineering, business, geoscience and health. Four areas matter most to Indian applicants.
1. The Schulich School of Engineering
Schulich welcomes around 1,000 new undergraduates a year and runs the Engineering Internship Program, which gives qualified third-year students a full-time paid placement of 12 to 16 months, starting in May, September or January. Interns begin with entry-level engineering work and build toward early Engineer-in-Training tasks. For an Indian student, a 12- to 16-month Canadian work record before graduation is a genuine advantage when you move on to a PGWP and job hunting.
2. Haskayne School of Business
Haskayne's international undergraduate rate is $3,610.44 per 3-unit course for 2026-27 — higher than Arts and Science, lower than Engineering. Calgary's head-office economy in energy, agribusiness and finance gives business students a real local job market to practise in.
3. Science, Computing and Health
The Faculty of Science (which includes Computer Science), Kinesiology, Nursing and the Cumming School of Medicine's Bachelor of Health Sciences all sit in UCalgary's standard international fee group of $3,078.21 per course. That makes a science or computer science degree here noticeably cheaper per year than engineering.
Most popular routes for Indian students: undergraduate Engineering (with the internship year), Computer Science, Haskayne business degrees, Geoscience and Health Sciences; and at graduate level, course-based and thesis-based master's in Engineering, Computer Science and business.
Admissions for Indian Students
Undergraduate
- Application window: the international undergraduate application opens on 15 August and closes on 1 March. Documents are due by 15 March, and final high school transcripts by 1 August. UCalgary's own advice is to apply early.
- Conditional offers are enough to start your visa: UCalgary states that international students only need a conditional offer of admission to apply for a study permit. That gives you months of useful lead time.
- Grade 12 requirements are programme-specific. UCalgary's pages do not publish a single India percentage cut-off, so check each programme's prerequisite subjects and ask the recruitment team how your board marks are assessed.
- The English pathway exists if you need it: the Academic Communication Certificate (ACC) is UCalgary's English pathway, taking 4 to 11 months depending on your level. Completing it can make you eligible for conditional admission and carries 6 units of transfer credit.
The English rule that saves most Indian applicants a test fee. UCalgary's undergraduate English page lists India among its ELP-exempt countries, and one of the accepted routes is "three years of study in an ELP-exempt country". If you do sit a test, the minimums are IELTS Academic 6.5, Duolingo 120, or TOEFL iBT 86 (for tests before 21 January 2026) or 4.5 on the new scale. Nursing and Education set higher scores. Read the rule for your programme and, if it applies to you, put the money and weeks you would have spent on IELTS into a stronger application.
Graduate — Master's and PhD
- Degree length: the Faculty of Graduate Studies calendar asks for a four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution. A four-year BE or BTech fits that cleanly. If you hold a three-year BA, BSc or BCom, use UCalgary's country-by-country equivalency tool for India and confirm with the programme before you pay the application fee.
- GPA: the minimum is equivalent to 3.00 on UCalgary's four-point scale, calculated on the second half of your degree — typically your last two years. Many programmes set higher bars.
- English: the graduate minimum on TOEFL iBT is 86 (or 4.5 for tests after 21 January 2026), and IELTS, Duolingo and PTE are also accepted. Graduate Program Directors may waive the requirement if you completed a bachelor's degree of at least three years where the language of instruction and examination was English — ask your programme about this early.
- Timing: UCalgary advises that international students starting in a fall term should submit their study permit application before 1 May of that year.
The Real Cost of UCalgary in 2026-27
UCalgary bills international undergraduates per 3-unit course, and its fee year runs from 1 May 2026 to 30 April 2027. A normal full-time year is ten courses (30 units). Here are the published international rates and what they add up to:
| Faculty (international rate group) | Per 3-unit course | Ten courses (approx. one year) |
|---|---|---|
| Most faculties — Arts, Science, Kinesiology, Nursing, Education, Social Work, BHSc | $3,078.21 | about $30,782 |
| Haskayne School of Business | $3,610.44 | about $36,104 |
| Schulich School of Engineering | $4,148.73 | about $41,487 |
| Faculty of Law — Juris Doctor | $5,309.01 | about $53,090 |
- Co-op and internship courses are charged separately — $2,412.75 per 15 units.
- General fees are charged on top of tuition. UCalgary's online cost estimator adds them to your programme, residence and meal plan choices, and is valid up to April 2027.
- Living costs: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires a single study permit applicant outside Quebec to show $23,448 a year for living expenses, on top of first-year tuition and travel, for applications from 1 September 2026. Treat that as the floor for your budget, not the ceiling.
- A realistic first-year planning figure for an engineering student is therefore tuition of about $41,500 plus general fees plus at least $23,448 of living money — and about $11,000 less for a science or arts student.
Scholarships for International Students
- University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship — $20,000 a year
- For international students entering first year of any undergraduate degree who have met the English requirement. It is renewable in years two, three and four if you keep a GPA of 2.60 over at least 24 units and continue paying international tuition. The criteria include academic excellence and achievement outside the classroom. UCalgary's page lists two awards, so treat it as a prestige award worth a strong application.
- University of Calgary International Entrance Award — $20,000
- A merit-based award for first-year international undergraduates in any programme, with the number of awards varying each year. It is applied for through the High School Nominated Awards portal.
- The timeline that decides it
- Awards applications open on 1 October. The Prestige Award application deadline is 1 December, with documents due 15 December — three months before the admission deadline. Students who apply for admission in September or October are the ones who can compete for these awards comfortably.
Shaping an awards application around both your marks and what you have done outside the classroom is where a little early guidance goes a long way — talk to us in August or September and you will have time to do it properly.
Canadian Study Permit Essentials for 2026
- Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): most undergraduate applicants need a PAL from the province where they will study. Alberta's allocation under the 2026 international student cap is 32,271 study permit applications. Ask UCalgary how and when it issues PALs once you accept your offer.
- Master's and PhD students are exempt: since 1 January 2026, students in a master's or doctoral degree at a public institution such as UCalgary do not need a PAL and are not counted in the provincial caps. IRCC has also set a 14-day processing standard for eligible doctoral applicants applying from outside Canada.
- Proof of funds: $23,448 a year for one student's living costs outside Quebec, plus tuition and travel, for applications from 1 September 2026.
- Work while you study: up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks such as summer and winter holidays.
- Co-op and internships: since 1 April 2026, post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for a work placement that is a required part of their programme, as long as it makes up 50% or less of the programme and the school confirms the requirement in a letter.
Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka
If you are applying from Bangalore or anywhere in Karnataka, here is what is specific to you.
- Karnataka II PUC marks: UCalgary's pages do not set out a specific rule for the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) II PUC. Ask the international recruitment team how your PUC subjects and marks are assessed for your programme's prerequisites — and ask before the 1 December awards deadline, not after.
- The English exemption is country-based: UCalgary's rule is about three years of study in India, not about a named board. That is worth confirming for your PUC years, because it may mean you can skip IELTS entirely.
- Karnataka degrees for a master's: UCalgary publishes a country equivalency tool rather than a list of named Indian universities. If your degree is a four-year BE from a VTU-affiliated college, it matches the four-year baccalaureate rule directly; a three-year degree from Bangalore University or another Karnataka university should be checked with your programme first.
- Biometrics: IRCC lists a Bengaluru visa application centre (run by VFS Global) among its Indian collection points. Appointments are free to book, so book your slot as soon as IRCC asks for biometrics.
- Getting there: from Kempegowda International Airport, plan on at least one connection to reach Calgary. Price your flights when you set your budget rather than after your offer.
- Meet us in person: Falcon Nova's office is on the 7th floor of Kirloskar Business Park in Hebbal, North Bangalore, and you can book free counselling there or online.
Staying On After Graduation
- No field-of-study restriction for degree holders. IRCC states that graduates with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree have no field-of-study requirement for the PGWP.
- Master's graduates can get three years. A master's programme of at least eight months can lead to a PGWP of up to three years, even if the programme was shorter than two years. A bachelor's of two years or more can also lead to a three-year permit.
- Language requirement: you must show CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French in all four skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking — when you apply for the PGWP. Plan to sit an approved test in your final year.
- The internship year counts in your favour. Canadian employers read a 12- to 16-month Schulich internship as real experience, which is exactly what helps a PGWP holder land their first full-time role.
Is the University of Calgary Right for You?
Calgary is an excellent fit if you want a research university with published, predictable fees, a practical engineering or business education tied to a real industrial economy, and an English rule that already recognises your Indian schooling. The $20,000 entrance awards reward students who apply early, and the internship year gives engineers a head start on Canadian experience.
It rewards planning. The 1 December awards deadline comes three months before the admission deadline, graduate programmes expect a four-year degree or a checked equivalent, and Alberta winters are cold — a good coat is part of the budget. Students who map those three things out in advance tend to find Calgary one of the smoothest Canadian applications they make.
