If you want to graduate with real work experience on your CV, the University of Limerick makes it part of the degree. Its Cooperative Education programme arranges more than 2,600 placements every year with around 600 employers, and UL describes it as Ireland's largest undergraduate placement programme. It is also UL's calling card. Add a riverside campus and a place of joint 388th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and it's clear why UL belongs on an Indian student's shortlist.
UL opened in 1972 and has grown into a university of more than 19,000 students. Its 330-acre campus sits on the banks of the River Shannon, 5km from Limerick city and 20km from Shannon International Airport. The North and South campuses are joined by the Living Bridge, Ireland's longest pedestrian bridge. For Indian students looking to study in Ireland, UL offers a full campus experience at a lower cost of living than Dublin, with a degree structure built around employability.
This guide explains how to study at the University of Limerick as an international student: the 2026-27 fees, how Co-op works, the India-specific scholarship, the English requirements, and the Irish visa and work rules.
The University of Limerick at a Glance
Co-op: UL's Biggest Advantage
At most universities, an internship is something you find for yourself. At UL, Cooperative Education is a formal, compulsory and academically accredited part of many undergraduate degrees. You usually go out in the second or third year of a four-year degree and spend typically six to eight months working with an employer, then return to finish your studies.
- Scale: Over 2,600 placements a year, through a network of around 600 national and international employers.
- Inclusive by design: UL describes Co-op as open to every student on a participating programme, whatever their discipline, academic standing or skills profile.
- Global reach: Kemmy Business School students regularly take up placements with partner firms in other countries, including Luxembourg, France, Spain, Germany and the USA.
- Support: UL's Cooperative Education and Careers Division prepares students for the application process and works with employers on the placement calendar.
Insider tip: Co-op is a feature of UL's undergraduate programmes. If you're choosing between an Irish bachelor's and heading straight to a master's later, UL's Co-op is a strong reason to start in Ireland at undergraduate level. Each programme has its own placement calendar, so check how it works for yours. We're happy to compare the options with you in a free counselling session.
What Can You Study at UL?
1. Computing, AI and Software
UL's one-year MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning covers deep learning, reinforcement learning, evolutionary computation and explainable AI, with applications in natural language processing and machine vision. It sits alongside the MSc Software Engineering, the MSc in Software Development: International Systems and the MEng in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence.
2. Engineering
Engineering is one of UL's traditional strengths, and Indian graduates will find master's in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and Mechatronics, all at €20,800 for 2026-27. The Shannon region is home to aviation and manufacturing employers, which suits these programmes well.
3. Kemmy Business School
The Kemmy Business School offers one-year master's in Business Analytics, Finance, Project Management, International Management and Global Business and Marketing. Undergraduates can take the BA International Business and Bachelor of Business Studies, which are also the degrees covered by the Jim Kemmy India Scholarship.
4. Sport, Health and the Arts
UL is well known in Ireland for sport and health sciences, and it also offers professional programmes such as the MSc in Speech and Language Therapy. Its Irish World Academy of Music and Dance runs its own scholarships for non-EU students on its taught MA programmes.
Most Popular Courses for Indian Students: MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, MSc Software Engineering, MSc Business Analytics, MSc Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, MSc Project Management, and the BA International Business and Bachelor of Business Studies.
Entry Requirements
Postgraduate
- Academic: Requirements vary by programme. The MSc AI and Machine Learning, for example, asks for at least a second-class honours grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant subject.
- Indian qualifications: UL publishes country-level equivalences through its international team. Confirm yours before you apply.
- Documents: Academic transcripts, certified identity documents, English results and translations of any non-English documents.
- How to apply: Apply directly online through the Apply Now button on your programme page.
- Deadlines: UL opens September applications well in advance and closes them in early July, but popular programmes can close earlier. The AI and Machine Learning MSc had already closed for its latest intake.
Undergraduate
UL states that non-EU undergraduates apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO), in the same way as Irish students. Entry requirements for Indian Class XII results are set by programme, so ask UL's international recruitment team for your programme's requirement. For the Jim Kemmy India Scholarship, you'll need 75% or above across Standard X and XII.
English Language Requirements (Postgraduate)
| Test | UL minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5, no component below 6.0 |
| PTE Academic | 61, no section below 59 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120, no subscore below 110 |
| Cambridge (CAE / CPE) | Grade C |
Some programmes ask for more. You can apply before sitting your test, and UL will issue a conditional offer. If you need a little extra support, UL's Language Centre runs pre-sessional English on campus.
Tuition Fees 2026-27
| Master's programme | Non-EU fee (2026-27) |
|---|---|
| MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning | €20,800 |
| MSc Software Engineering | €20,800 |
| MSc Mechanical / Aeronautical Engineering | €20,800 |

UL's fees include tuition, student contribution and the student levy (€104 for 2026-27). Limerick's cost of living is lower than Dublin's, which helps your overall budget. Plan for at least the €10,000 Irish immigration requires you to show for living costs, and build your real budget around UL's accommodation options.
Scholarships for Indian Students
- Jim Kemmy India Scholarship (undergraduate)
- €4,000 a year for four years on the BA International Business or Bachelor of Business Studies at Kemmy Business School, subject to progression. You'll need an average of 75% or above in Standard X and XII, including English and Maths, plus UL's English language requirement and Indian citizenship. It's listed for 2025/26, so confirm the current round.
- International merit scholarships (postgraduate)
- UL automatically reviews every international applicant for a partial merit-based scholarship when they apply for a taught programme. No separate application is needed.
- Irish World Academy Stepping Stones Scholarships
- For non-EU students on taught MA programmes at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. These have their own application process and deadlines.
Ireland Visa and Work Rights
Getting from your UL offer to Limerick
- 1
Pay your tuition deposit. Irish immigration requires at least €6,000 of your tuition (or the full fee, if it is lower) to be paid before you apply for your visa.
- 2
Prove your living funds. Show immediate access to at least €10,000 for a year of study, ideally backed by six months of bank statements. For each later year of your course you also need access to another €10,000, on top of your fees.
- 3
Apply for your study visa on AVATS Online, with your UL offer, fee receipt, financial evidence, English results and private medical insurance, then give biometrics and lodge your documents at VFS Global. The Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi lists usual study-visa decisions at 4–8 weeks from the day it receives your application, and applications made less than three weeks before your course starts cannot be guaranteed a decision.
- 4
Register within 90 days of arriving. Book an appointment with Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), whose Registration Office is on Burgh Quay in Dublin; the fee is usually €300. You'll receive Stamp 2 permission and an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card, and UL's international office can tell you how registration works for its students.
Applying to UL from Bangalore and Karnataka
If you're applying from Bangalore or elsewhere in Karnataka, here's how each step of a UL application works from home.
- Karnataka II PUC and SSLC marks: UL doesn't publish Indian board-by-board requirements, so confirm with its international recruitment team how II PUC results from the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) are assessed for your programme. For the Jim Kemmy India Scholarship, work towards 75% or above across your SSLC and II PUC, including English and Maths.
- Degrees from Karnataka universities: UL handles Indian degree equivalences through its international team rather than a published institution list. Whether you studied at VTU, Bangalore University or elsewhere, share your transcripts early to confirm the grade needed. Remember that some UL master's, such as AI and Machine Learning, ask for a 2:2.
- Your visa application in Bangalore: VFS Global runs an Ireland Visa Application Centre in Bengaluru, open Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00, so you don't have to travel to another city to apply.
- Getting to Limerick: Plan for a one-stop journey from Kempegowda International Airport, usually connecting through a Middle Eastern or European hub into Ireland. Shannon Airport is 20km from campus.
- Talk to us in Hebbal: Falcon Nova's office is on the 7th floor of Kirloskar Business Park in Hebbal, North Bangalore. Book free counselling in person or online.
Life at UL
UL is a true campus university, with on-campus student villages, sports facilities and green space along the Shannon, all within walking distance of your lectures. It's a very different experience from a city-centre university, and many international students find it an easier place to settle, build friendships and focus on their studies. Limerick city is a short trip away, and Shannon Airport is 20km from campus.
Career Outcomes
- Work experience before graduation: Co-op puts an employer reference on your CV while you're still studying.
- A ready-made employer network: Around 600 Co-op employer partners, in Ireland and in other countries.
- In-demand master's: AI, software, analytics and engineering programmes match the areas where Irish employers hire actively.
- Up to two years on Stamp 1G: Master's graduates can build Irish work experience before moving to an employment permit.
Is UL Right for You?
UL suits students who want a proper campus, a more affordable city than Dublin, and a degree where work experience is built in rather than left to chance. If you're aiming for engineering, AI, software or business, and you like the idea of graduating with a Co-op placement already on your CV, UL is an excellent choice.
