Western University has risen nine places to #142 in the QS World University Rankings 2027, placing it sixth in Canada, and it remains first in Canada for citations per faculty. In other words, Western's research is some of the most cited in the country, and its campus in London, Ontario, gives you a classic university setting to do that research in.
For Indian students who want to study in Canada, Western combines a pathway to Ivey Business School, strong engineering and health programs, and a practical focus on careers. Western says 100% of its students have access to co-ops, internships and practicums, and reports a 93.5% employment rate within six months of graduating. This guide covers the costs, requirements, the award most Indian applicants should know about, the current visa rules, and how to apply from Bangalore and Karnataka.
Why Western? The Facts That Matter
What Can You Study at Western?
1. Business: Ivey and Management & Organizational Studies
The Ivey HBA is Western's best-known program. Students typically spend their first two years in another Western program and then join Ivey. High school applicants can secure a place early through Ivey's Advanced Entry Opportunity (AEO). Management & Organizational Studies (MOS) is a popular direct-entry business option, and there is also a Commercial Aviation Management program.
2. Engineering, Computer Science and Science
Western Engineering requires Chemistry, Physics and Math and asks every applicant to complete the Casper test. Computer Science and Science require Math plus a science subject, and the Western Integrated Science (WISc) program has its own application.
3. Health Sciences, Medical Sciences and Kinesiology
Health Sciences (Biology and Math required), Medical Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Math) and Kinesiology are popular with Indian students planning careers in healthcare, research or further professional study. London's reputation for health care makes this a natural fit.
Popular with Indian students: Engineering, Computer Science, Health Sciences, Medical Sciences, Management & Organizational Studies, and the Ivey AEO route into the HBA.
Tuition and Living Costs
| Item (year 1) | Western's estimate (CAD) |
|---|---|
| International tuition and fees | $48,000 to $64,400 |
| Residence and meal plan (8 months) | $16,510 to $19,140 |
| Books and supplies | From about $1,500 |
| Local transport | Bus pass included in fees |
Western's estimates are based on 2025-26 tuition, and you get your exact bill once you register for courses. The best part is Western's tuition fee guarantee: after Year 1, international undergraduate tuition rises by no more than 4% a year. If you would like help turning these ranges into a full four-year budget that also covers Canada's proof-of-funds rule, talk to us. It is exactly the kind of planning our free counselling covers.
Entry Requirements for Indian Students
- What you submit: Standard X and Standard XII results (current grades on Western's India Grades Form), proof of English proficiency if English isn't your first language, and any program-specific requirements.
- Final documents: These come through your exam board, whether CBSE (AISSCE), CISCE (ISC) or a state board (Intermediate, Pre-University, Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary School Certificate).
- Typical admitted average: At least a B (3.0) on the Canadian scale. Western calculates your average based on your curriculum and grading scale. Its typical first-year class enters with around 88%, and some programs are more competitive.
- Conditional offer: Most main-campus programs ask Indian-patterned students to maintain a 73% average.
- Program subjects: Engineering needs Chemistry, Physics and Math. Medical Sciences needs Biology, Chemistry and Math. MOS needs Math. Arts & Humanities has no required courses.
A second route in: Western International College. International high school students can also start with a first year at Western International College, with smaller classes and extra support, then complete years 2 to 4 at Western for a Western degree. It is currently available for Management & Organizational Studies, Science and Social Science.
English Language Requirements
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each section.
- TOEFL iBT: 83 overall (20 per section) for tests before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall (4.0 in Reading, Speaking and Writing; 4.5 in Listening) from that date.
- PTE Academic: 58 overall, with 56 in each section. Cambridge C1/C2: 176, with 169 in each section.
- Timing: For Fall 2027, take your test before March 2027. Scores from before 1 January 2025 are not accepted.
- Waivers: Applicants outside Ontario can request a waiver with a signed school letter confirming the language of instruction and years in English-medium study.
Scholarships: The One Most Indian Applicants Should Know
- Welcome to Canada Admission Scholarship: $10,000 plus guaranteed residence
- $10,000 for first year and guaranteed on-campus residence for your first two years. You are considered automatically if you are an international student completing school outside Canada and applying for full-time first-year study at Western's main campus. The published criteria cover 2026-27 entry, and recipients are notified by the end of April.

- Western states that this grant is paid on top of the Welcome to Canada Admission Scholarship.

Your Canadian Study Permit: Current Rules
Getting from offer to study permit
- 1
Accept your Western offer. Your letter of acceptance anchors the application.
- 2
Get a PAL if you are an undergraduate. Since 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at a public institution are exempt. Ontario held the largest 2026 allocation, 104,780 applications.
- 3
Show funds. For applications on or after 1 September 2026, IRCC requires CAD 23,448 for one year's living costs (single applicant outside Quebec), plus first-year tuition and travel. Six months of bank statements, a Canadian GIC or funds already in a Canadian account can all serve as proof.
- 4
Give biometrics (CAD 85) at a Canada visa application centre — for Bangalore applicants, the VFS Bengaluru centre.
- 5
Know your work rights: Up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.
Co-op and internships: Since 1 April 2026, post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for a required placement that makes up 50% or less of their program, as long as Western confirms the requirement in a letter and your study permit allows on-campus work. There is no weekly hour limit on the placement. That makes Western's co-op, internship and practicum options simpler to take up.
After Graduation: PGWP
- No field-of-study limit for degrees: Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are exempt.
- Language: CLB 7 in all four skills.
- Length: Up to three years for programs of two years or more, and up to three years for eligible master's programs of at least eight months.
Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka
- Karnataka PUC is covered. Western names Pre-University state board certificates among the accepted final documents. II PUC is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). Your application uses Standard X plus your current II PUC grades, and a conditional offer usually asks you to hold 73%.
- CBSE and ICSE students: The same Standard X plus current Standard XII approach applies, with final results verified through CBSE or CISCE.
- English-medium schooling: Many Bangalore schools teach in English. If yours does, Western's waiver route (a signed school letter) is worth exploring before booking a test.
- Biometrics: Canada's visa application centre in Bangalore (VFS Bengaluru) takes biometrics, so you can give them without leaving the city.
- Travel: London, Ontario is about two hours from Toronto by road. From Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), plan for at least one connection. Compare routings via Indian, Gulf, European or Canadian hubs.
