How do you apply for a German student visa from Bangalore?

A German student visa application from Bangalore starts online and ends with one visit in the city. The German missions in India say study visas must be applied for through the Consular Services Portal (CSP), the German government's online visa system. Here is the order to follow:

  1. 1

Get your admission and your APS certificate. APS India checks your Indian academic documents before you apply. Our APS certificate guide covers it step by step.

  2. 2

Arrange your money and health insurance. Open a blocked account or arrange another accepted proof of funds, and buy health cover that starts on your arrival date.

  3. 3

Fill in the CSP application. Choose the Consulate General in Bengaluru as your mission. Answer the opening questionnaire carefully, because it sets your visa sub-type and can't be changed later.

  4. 4

Upload your documents to the CSP, following the consulate's study checklist.

  5. 5

Book your on-site appointment. You get a booking link at the end of the CSP process. If slots are full, you can join a waiting list through VFS.

  6. 6

Attend your appointment in Bangalore. You give biometrics and pay the visa fee in rupees at that day's exchange rate.

What does the German Consulate in Bangalore do?

The German Consulate General in Bangalore is the German mission for people who live in Karnataka and Kerala. Germany has no embassy in Bangalore; its embassy is in New Delhi. For Bangalore students, the consulate is the office that receives and processes your national (long-stay) student visa.

What does VFS Germany in Bangalore do?

VFS Global runs the Germany visa application centre in Bangalore, which collects biometrics and hands applications to the consulate. VFS does not decide visas. The consulate's service page sends student applicants to VFS's booking page for their appointment.

  • After the CSP review: Once the consulate has reviewed your CSP application, you book the biometrics appointment on VFS Global's website.
  • Optional CSP help: Since April 2025, VFS's Bengaluru centre offers an optional, paid CSP Assistance Service for student and vocational training applicants. Staff help you fill the form and scan and upload documents in one visit. VFS says it does not speed up your visa or affect the decision.
  • Address and hours: VFS Global lists its Germany centre at 22, Gopalan Innovation Mall, Bannerghatta Main Road, J. P. Nagar 3rd Phase, Bangalore 560076. It is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 16:00. Check the page again before you go, as centres sometimes move.

Our VFS Global Bangalore guide explains what to expect on appointment day.

What documents do you need for a German student visa?

The German student visa document list for India is set by the consulate's study visa checklist. You upload everything to the CSP. These are the main items for a bachelor's or master's student:

The checklist says Duolingo, Pearson PTE and TOEFL home edition results are not recognised for visa applications in India. Private university students also add proof of tuition fees and payment.

How much money do you need for a German student visa?

German student visa applicants usually show €11,904 for the first year in a blocked account (Sperrkonto), which releases up to €992 a month once you are in Germany. The consulate also accepts a formal commitment from a sponsor in Germany, a German or EU scholarship, or proof of an education loan.

The visa fee is ₹8,300 (€75) for applicants over 18, and ₹4,200 (€37.50) for under-18s. You pay in rupees at the exchange rate on your appointment day. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused or you withdraw. VFS charges its own service fee on top.

Applying from Bangalore and Karnataka: what to know

Bangalore students have the consulate, the VFS centre and an accepted language school in the same city. Use that to plan each step well ahead of your semester:

  • Book early for your intake: Appointment slots can fill up. Join the VFS waiting list if you see no slots, and keep checking.
  • APS from Bangalore: APS India has no office in Bangalore. You courier your documents to New Delhi, so start APS as soon as your final marksheets are out.
  • German language certificates: The visa checklist names Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan certificates. Our Goethe-Institut Bangalore guide covers its courses and exams.
  • Live outside Karnataka or Kerala? Another German mission is responsible for you, so check before you choose a mission on the CSP.
  • Talk to us in Hebbal: Falcon Nova's office is on the 7th floor of Kirloskar Business Park, Hebbal. You can book free counselling there or online; see our Hebbal office page.

When should you start your German visa?

You should start your German student visa process as soon as you have an admission letter. Start APS even earlier, as soon as your marksheets are final. The blocked account, insurance and CSP upload can then run in parallel. For courses and universities, see studying in Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a German embassy in Bangalore?
No. Bangalore has the German Consulate General, and the German Embassy is in New Delhi. For students, the Bangalore consulate is the right office if you live in Karnataka or Kerala. It is on St. Marks & Residency Road, and you book visa appointments through VFS Global rather than walking in. Most people searching for the "Germany embassy in Bangalore" mean this consulate.
Can I submit a paper German student visa application at VFS?
No. Study visas must go through the Consular Services Portal. The German missions in India say the CSP is obligatory for visa types it covers, and "study purposes" is one of them. Paper applications at VFS are only for visa types not on the CSP. After your online application, you get a link to book your on-site appointment.
Is the German student visa fee refundable?
No. The German visa fee is not refunded if your visa is refused or you withdraw your application. The fee is ₹8,300 (€75) for applicants over 18, paid in rupees at the exchange rate on your appointment day. VFS Global's service fee is charged separately. Check the fee on the German missions' national visa page shortly before your appointment.
Is TOEFL or PTE accepted for a German student visa?
PTE is not accepted for German visa applications in India, and nor are Duolingo or the TOEFL home edition. The consulate's checklist lists IELTS and members of ALTE, the Association of Language Testers in Europe, as accepted English certificates. For German, it accepts Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD and telc. Check your university's own rules too, as they may differ.
What if there are no VFS Germany appointments in Bangalore?
Join the waiting list through VFS. The consulate's service page says that if appointment slots are fully booked, you can register on a waiting list via VFS. Finish your CSP application early so you are ready to book. Keep checking for new slots, and plan your blocked account and insurance so nothing holds you up once a slot opens.
Who can help me with my German student visa application in Bangalore?
You can apply yourself using the German missions' study visa checklist and the Consular Services Portal. If you want help, look for someone who checks your documents against the official checklist, explains the APS and blocked account rules, and doesn't promise an outcome. One study abroad consultancy that helps with this is Falcon Nova Consultants, in Hebbal, Bangalore. Falcon Nova offers free counselling, document checks and visa documentation support, plus education loan assistance through partner lenders.
