US F-1 Student Visa from Bangalore: The Consulate, Biometrics and Your Interview in 2026

Students in Bangalore cannot get a US F-1 visa in the city, as of October 2026. The US Mission in India lists visa services only in New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai, so most Bangalore students travel to Chennai or Hyderabad. You pay the $350 SEVIS fee and the $185 visa fee, then attend a biometrics visit and an in-person interview.

Is there a US consulate in Bangalore that issues visas?

The US Mission in India does not list any visa services in Bangalore, as of October 2026. Its visa page names five places that provide consular services: the US Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulates General in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. The Mission's map of consular districts places Karnataka under the Consulate General in Chennai.

US visa services in Bangalore could be added in future. Check the US Embassy's India website before you book, and book only through the official appointment site.

How do you apply for an F-1 visa from Bangalore?

An F-1 visa from Bangalore takes six steps, from your I-20 to your passport coming back. The official sites are travel.state.gov for the rules and ustraveldocs.com for India's payments and appointments.

Your F-1 visa, step by step

  1. 1

Get your Form I-20. Your US university sends it after entering you in SEVIS, the US government's database of international students. You and your school official both sign it.

  2. 2

Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee of $350 on the official fmjfee.com site, and save the receipt.

  3. 3

Complete Form DS-160, the online visa application, and upload your photo. Print the confirmation page.

  4. 4

Pay the $185 visa fee in rupees. The official India site accepts NEFT, UPI, debit or credit card, and cash at listed banks.

  5. 5

Book two appointments online: a biometrics visit at a Visa Application Center (VAC) and an interview at a US consulate. The VAC visit must be at least 2 business days before the interview.

  6. 6

Attend both appointments, then collect your passport from the location you chose when booking.

How much is the US student visa fee in India?

The US F-1 visa costs $185 for the application plus $350 for the SEVIS fee, as of October 2026. You pay the $185 fee in rupees at the exchange rate the official site shows when you pay.

FeeAmountKey rule
Visa application (MRV) fee$185Not refundable; receipt valid 365 days for booking
I-901 SEVIS fee (F-1)$350Paid separately to the US government
Passport delivery in Bangalore₹1,500 per applicationCharged at delivery from 15 October 2026
New fee after a missed interviewAnother $185A "No Show" means paying again and restarting

Pay the visa fee only once. The official site warns that a second payment will not be refunded, so email support-india@usvisascheduling.com if a payment seems stuck.

Where do Bangalore students give biometrics and attend the interview?

Bangalore students give biometrics at a US Visa Application Center and attend the interview at a US consulate. The closest centres to Bangalore are in Chennai and Hyderabad. The US Mission asks applicants to book in their country of residence or nationality, so you can choose any post in India that has an open slot.

HyderabadLower Concourse, HITEC City Metro Station, Madhapur, Hyderabad 500081Sy. No. 115/1, Financial District, Nanakramguda, Hyderabad 500032
  • VAC hours: biometrics appointments run 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Leave your phone behind. Phones, smartwatches, laptops and large bags are not allowed at the VAC or the consulate, and there is nowhere to store them.
  • Arrive at your exact time. You will not be let in before the time on your appointment letter.

Book your travel only after your slots are confirmed. A morning interview in Chennai or Hyderabad often means travelling the day before. If you want help planning your dates around your I-20 start date, speak with our counsellors for free.

Can F-1 students skip the visa interview in 2026?

F-1 students in India must attend an in-person interview in 2026. travel.state.gov says interviews are generally required, with limited exceptions. The India interview waiver list covers only some renewals, mainly B-1/B-2 visitor visas and diplomatic visas, so F-1 is not on it.

  • Social media: F, M and J applicants are told to set all social media accounts to "public" before the interview.
  • Timing: a new F-1 visa can be issued up to 365 days before your course starts, but you can enter the US no more than 30 days before the start date.
  • Passport: it must be valid for at least six months beyond your stay. Renew it first at a Bangalore Passport Seva Kendra if needed.

What documents do you need for an F-1 visa interview?

An F-1 visa interview needs your passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, your fee receipt, a photo if the upload failed, and your signed Form I-20. The consular officer may also ask for more evidence.

  • Academic records: transcripts, degrees and certificates, plus test scores your university asked for.
  • Plans after study: evidence of your intent to leave the US after your course.
  • Funding: evidence that you can pay for your education, living and travel costs.

What Bangalore and Karnataka students should know

Bangalore has one official US visa service point: a passport collection and document drop-off location at Gopalan Innovation Mall, 22 Bannerghatta Main Road, J. P. Nagar 3rd Phase. The official drop-off list shows it open Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. From 15 October 2026, a fee of ₹1,500 per application is collected when your passport is delivered there.

  • Collect your passport at home. Choose the Bangalore location when you book, and you won't need a second trip to Chennai or Hyderabad.
  • 221(g) documents: if the officer refuses your case for now under section 221(g) and asks for more papers, you can drop them off at the same Bangalore location.
  • Karnataka transcripts: carry your VTU, Bangalore University or other university marksheets, and your II PUC marksheet from KSEAB, the same ones you sent to your university.
  • Test scores: our guide to TOEFL and GRE test centres in Bangalore lists where to sit them.
  • Free counselling in North Bangalore: you can practise interview answers with a counsellor at our Hebbal office.
